Why should welfare programs exist? Archived Message

Really? Why should they? I'm talking about programs for those who can work, not Social Security, Medicare, etc for seniors and disabled.... How about doing away with these programs, cutting taxes, and paying down our national debt, more money flowing into the economy, more jobs for those who are willing to work, more people with more money to donate to charities to help the desperately poor. Charities are far more efficient, and more compassionate to those they server than any government agency ever has or ever will be. In fact, why not use part of the money that is currently being spent on these programs to fund larger tax credits to encorage people to donate to charity?
