Catching, I don't think it's outrage, rather annoyance, and concern for safety reasons. And sorry, I didn't live in GC during the time that you had to walk to school both ways uphill and before the 19th street overpass. Also, I don't think anyone here is complaining that the repairs are getting done. It's more about the closing of the other crossings. Yes, I understand I can go around. However what used to take a few minutes is starting to take longer and longer. I also believe, that if they have no traffic, it shouldn't take 6 months to repair the overpass. They are knocking down bridges and rebuilding them over 64/40 in the same amount of time WITH traffic. And, as Lisa mentioned, GC isn't great about keeping deadlines. I'm not sure what good it did for the railroad to contribute to Century Drive. As for your reasoning about the high speed train, well people STILL have to cross the tracks, they just changed the location. By the way, that intersection is a hazard waiting to happen. People drive farther out in the middle of the road because of the parked cars, but they don't bother to scoot back over at the stop sign. So, anybody trying to turn onto Missouri, has to squeeze through. It's worse with the big trucks. There's already been two accidents that I know of at that intersection, I'm sure we will be seeing many more. Not only that, but it only takes a couple of cars or big trucks to block that intersection all together, especially when there is a train. It's ridiculous. Missouri Ave is a fairly busy road, and the original plans would have made it easier to turn. It had 20th street open, and a curve for the big trucks to turn, with a straight away to keep going down Missouri. Now we have big trucks trying to make turns on a tight corner, and frequent traffic jams. Why they changed that plan, I have no idea, but whoever did obviously didn't think it through very well. And of course, citizens didn't get to chime in because by the time they realized what was happening, it was too late. As for 20th street crossing being blocked when 22nd and 25th street were blocked, actually that only happened when a train was passing through. No they aren't short. However, they do go VERY slowly through there. Or worse when they let the train just sit on the tracks in that location. If 25th St or 22nd St were blocked, often you had plenty of time to get to 20th street. It would be one thing if by creating the new crossing it eliminated them from just sitting on the tracks and blocking crossings, but they still do it, even with the new crossing. And since, it's not a highway, there's not much you can do about it. No law (to my knowledge) saying they can't. THAT's why we are saying poor planning. By cutting off the number of options to get around the trains, you make it harder to get across the tracks, and longer for emergency vehicles to get through. By cutting of 22nd street, and 25th St, there is more traffic at an already busy intersection. Century Drive did not help in any way to make it easier to get across the tracks, it just made it longer. Oh, and don't forget about the bicyclists. What was once less than a mile, is now several miles away. Though it doesn't surprise me that they sold out the citizens to the railroad in exchange for some money. Even though the railroad is still going to be here regardless, lets make an already declining neighborhood even more unattractive to new residents.
