to be honest...what i am suggesting would remove me from the profession completely...unless we hired lesser qualified teachers as assistants or aids...or i went back to college and worked as a historian in a museum or publish a book... i think money would make people enter the field who would otherwise not. that would increase the talent in the field as a whole. i see your point with teacher pay - just because you have more education and therefore more pay does NOT mean you are a better teacher... and to be honest - i do not currently blame teachers. but i think if our country became serious about education we would do at least this - at least attract the best into the field... what better a device to attract them than money? i just lose your logic - you assume that more money will not help without ever having any data to refer to - you just say without any proof that it will not fix the problem. i think a good teacher is someone who does more than just cares - they have to be intelligent enough to learn anything - they have to be wise enough and smart enough to manipulate a group of young people to not only obey - but to LEARN and engage material that the students would never deem as fun or exciting. a good teacher can make factoids and formulas fun or interesting...can earn the respect of their students and expect the most from them...the most they can personally deliver. i do not think a standardized test can capture these elements of a person's ability to teach. and for this explanation - our country is full of good teachers...which makes me think we should stop focusing on blaming our teachers and cutting their pay and worsening their job environment by swelling their class sizes. and then the question arises - how do we hold teachers accountable without standardized tests? how else can we measure quality education and academic growth? if i had the answers i would write a book and make alot of money. as much as i try and engage the topic...i have yet to figure anything out...
