There are people that have strong opinions on this subject. If those opinions are based on well-meaning intentions and facts, I will usually listen or in this case, read then respond respectfully.
I agree with the statistics you cut and pasted into your responses in this thread, however, I see it as data that actually supports my argument.
As with all data, it can be interpreted according the view point of the interpreter. There are a tremendous amount of people receiving benefits/welfare/food stamps and other forms of government assistance in this country. There are a disproportionate amount of ethnic minorities (African American, Hispanic, Native American) receiving these benefits. The amount of children living in poverty in this country is shockingly high. The reason I believe the statistics support my opinion is the parents living under these conditions are raising their children as they were raised. The intent of the welfare system is to help people when they are struggling. It was not meant to be a life style choice. Unfortunately, the culture of the multi-generation welfare family sustains having children at an early age as acceptable. Many have children before attaining an education that would secure a job that would enable the young woman to be self-sufficient.
The statistics about the number of people receiving these benefits also supports my conclusion that the system is not working. Your statement regarding that you work in the trenches daily makes me infer you work for a social service agency or possibly in education. I respect your devotion and attitude in trying to make a difference in the lives of your fellow citizens. In my opinion, when you said you experienced little success-also supports my comment about welfare causes complacency and apathy. It is not my intent to twist your words or try to embarrass anyone. As I stated before, statistics and data can be interpreted (and in some cases manipulated) to support just about any argument. I always make it my intention to be kind and respectful when debating an issue. Calling people dumb and making other insults only hinders the process that should be mentally stimulating as well a chance to learn something not previously known. I hope you continue the work you do. Trying to make a difference in the lives of people is something I admire. It must be frustrating at times-but please keep in mind, roses have to be watered, fed and nurtured before they bloom.
