The roads more than pay for themselves, Regardless of the people abusing them. If/when people are caught abusing them, they do face punishment.
and those receiving aid from the government are consumers. Consumers spend money in stores, which pays the bills of the people who own those stores.
by giving money to people who would otherwise not have much - you add consumerism and therefore social welfare MORE THAN PAYS FOR ITSELF as well.
You were close, but the government does has the power to post roads. The [federal] government does not have the power to create "social welfare." Should the government[s] take on the issues of "social welfare" They should then have the authority to regulate it, as they do with the highways. [aka, drug testing it's users, like they already do to commercial drivers, on the interstates]
not sure what you mean - if the government did not have the power to administer aid to its own people, then how are they able to? i consider social welfare a part of the "general welfare" of our people.
beyond the fact that our constitution was intended to evolve over time, and mainly set out to address many issues that faced them during that time...
there is this in article 1 section 8 of the constitution regarding the powers of Congress...
"The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;"
it is mainly about interpretation and applying these virtuous ideals laid out by our founding fathers, for the most part, to modern practices of public policy.
for example - i feel the right to bear arms should not include nuclear or "dirty" bombs of any kind. all about interpretation.
in the simplest of terms; elastic clause.
If they are caught, they do face the penalty.
as do people who falsify information about their income.
You have three years unemployment pay available... (and once again, in the US nobody is starving [because of lack of food])
in a perfect capitalist society no one would ever get laid off, businesses would never go out of business, and everyone would have a good paying job.
however - this is a more dillusional thought than thinking communism in the purest form could actually work.
no one - except a fool - would argue that we do not need a safety net for society as whole. especially if we want to encourage entrepenuers to take risks and invest/spend their money.
beyond that, those who are desperate would likely turn to crime in order to survive. by this i mean - steal food from the store, armed robbery, or any act that would get them a nice cozy prison cell with 3 meals a day and a way to get off the street.
And people like me would argue, welfare, is abused by most, not "some" receiving it.
i would not argue that some people have become reliant upon government assistance and have no problem living in extreme poverty...but i can not say most people receiving aid from the government do so in a malicious or licentious way.
agree to disagree.
the fact of the matter is - eliminating welfare would hurt the economy, lower our standard of living as a whole, and would provide a marginal impact on the deficit.
if you really are a champion of eliminating government waste, then you should be aiming your sights on the largest, most wasteful limb of our government; our military.
obama is cutting 10's of billions from their budget, and our generals say it will not hurt our troops or efforts one bit.
we understand we have to tighten our belts - no more escalades in the desert.
but 10's of billions is not enough when you spend trillions annually and trillions more in war appropriations.
if you were a true patriot - someone truly concerned with the direction and condition of our nation - you should examine and consider our military for cuts. we can cut more. alot more.
