This morning, I got a call about an application with a grocery store chain. No matter what happens, or if I could have some income soon, I just don't want to risk not getting a Wii U. Why might that happen? I read an Internet rumor that the last one was built this past Friday. That same site got a lot of details correct about Nintendo Switch. Other video game media companies were taking it seriously. From Nintendo's perspective, it kind of makes sense. They've struggled to sell the machines, and I've only heard of one more confirmed Wii U game in 2017, which will be dual-platform (Wii U and Switch).
So, I went to my mom. It's kind of humiliating when you became a legal adult over 18 years ago. She was OK with it, though, if I consider it like a birthday and Christmas gift. Mentally, I'd just be trying to figure out how not to view it as something mommy bought me, instead of being financially independent. Then I think of my game library, and my amiibo, and my Disney Infinity figures, ... They're all purchased with credit or from depositing a monthly allowance from my mom, so would there be a big difference? I just wanted to be a little legalistic and say, "I REFUSE to buy (name of console or other gadget) until it can be a reward for finding a job." Financially, I also couldn't do it with my credit card. Last month, from normal expenses and some extra stuff for Halloween, I came within $80 of my limit.
Even once I have the machine, it might be hard not feeling guilty about playing a game until I have a firm job offer. What's the deal with my resistance to immediate gratification? "Resistance is futile."
When you do get the Wii U, what can you set up without playing a game? That's what I wondered. I'm usually willr816 when I create user accounts. I've heard about how you might need a Nintendo Network name and password. I actually like WillR816 better if uppercase letters are treated differently than lowercase. Then I wondered, why not WiillR816? See what I did there? That might bug me just because it's six letters and the number six seems unlucky (although, I'm the #6 grandchild by birth order in my mom's family - she's #6 among her siblings).
Then I didn't know if many of the games I've bought have online features:
"Nintendoland" - Maybe not?
"New Super Mario Bros. U" - I doubt it, other than MiiVerse comments.
"Super Mario 3D Land" - I doubt it.
"DK Country: Tropical Freeze" - I doubt it.
"Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker" - I doubt it.
"Madden NFL '13" - It probably started with some online, but I assume people have moved on.
"NES Classic Remix" - I doubt it.
"Mario Kart 8" - YES! But, Rick said he doesn't play it anymore.
"Smash Bros. for Wii U" - YES! I'm not sure if Rick plays online.
"Wind Waker HD" - I doubt it.
"Twilight Princess HD" - I doubt it.
"Disney Infinity 2.0" - They shut down some of the services in September. In March, everything goes offline.
"Super Mario Maker" - YES! If I get really good at creating and uploading courses, I'll definitely share the codes to the board. Otherwise, I don't think of it as a multiplayer experience.
Pretty much, two games you can play online with friends? I remember making a Mii on the Wii system and not editing him too much after that. I'm pretty sure you need one to be your avatar for walking around in "NintendoLand." Based on that, they might just have some generic Miis when you start the game? Even on the Wii, I didn't use Netflix that often. I loved watching old episodes of "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" but they looked too compressed and grainy (even over component cables). That could be for a bunch of reasons (3 megabit Internet link?). They may not have archived those shows in a way that preserved high video quality (assuming it was filmed with decent equipment). There's something called Miiverse, but I'm not sure how that works. It sounds a little like a Facebook "News Feed" or a way to see your friends' "Twitter" accounts, but you can post drawings that you made with the Wii U GamePad? Is that the idea?
Well, I don't want to keep the grocery store waiting too long before calling back.
