Today, I hoped to finish setting up a bunch of the Wii U online features. I guess they're not all done, because I'm not currently subscribing to Netflix or Hulu. Amazon might have to wait for another day.
In the eShop, is that puzzle game their way of distracting you on a loading screen? I couldn't get the stuff to line up, so I wonder what happens when things do match. In the actual shop, it seems OK to navigate. If there's a way to just search for a game by some easy method (maybe THE NAME?), I think I missed it. From what I could see, you pick a genre and a publisher. I verified that the original "Disney InfINity" is a free download. They must assume that you already spent money on a starter pack, or the software wouldn't really be useful. Right now, I have about 20 GB of storage space (before potential updates for other games on disc and future downloadable content). That Disney game would eat up at least half of the internal storage. I kind of understand why they didn't include a physical hard drive for the Wii U (extra expense and you can't pick the size or the brand). The thing is, they're almost forcing you into one of two strategies: buy your discs in physical form to save storage space, or invest in a hard drive. I have the physical disc for "InfINity 2.0," but that digital version might only be $14.99 (it sort of makes sense, being older than the 3.0, which is $29.99). In order to install the 3.0, I think I'd have to move or delete the copy of "Mario Kart 8" that came with the machine (I have the retail version on disc).
For the games that have downloadable content, I think "Mario Kart 8" was easy enough to figure out. You probably want the combination pack (cheaper than separate purchases). I'm just not totally sure what you get in each pack. The DLC for "Super Smash Bros." looks INSANE! There are something like 129 different packages? I know I'd want Mewtwo (to go with the amiibo figure) and Ryu, but only for Wii U (not the one that also works on 3DS, although I might be more interested in 3DS than the Switch). The Mii costumes don't look that interesting. It kind of depends if I would ever fight as a Mii. Are there other reasons to get it? I guess you might be able to load up a Mii and let the CPU control it? I'm not even sure how expensive it could get to add a few characters and stages. Then there would be the matter of the internal storage.
After that was Miiverse: They walk you through a kind of user agreement, and then setting up your profile. I think I was able to find RickXTN (wearing some kind of hat and Sporting KC colors?). Beyond that, I'm not really sure how it works. There are something like 800 communities? I just wanted to make a drawing saying Hi, but I wasn't sure if it would be off topic, or whether there's a generic Wii U community where you introduce yourself. It's hard to tell how the drawings that pop up for the YouTube community are "relevant." I think my first official activity was answering a question about "Nintendo Land." You probably have to filter things out or narrow your feed down to just a few communities?
I'm not sure if it was because of powering down and coming back to the game, or due to setting up Miiverse, but now my "Nintendo Land" is packed! The sad thing is how I'm just ignoring those other Miis and going to the games. I guess I've only played four of the twelve. If Donkey Kong was number four, then I'm trying to figure out a neat way to organize the next few numbers. The "Luigi's Mansion" theme seems like a number six ("unlucky" number). "Octopus Dance" definitely sounds like a number eight to me (get it?). I think I like Yoshi as a character. I'm not even sure what you do in his game. I've played "Animal Crossing" way back on the GameCube (unless there was an N64 version). "Pikmin" is unfamiliar to me. After that, I'm trying to think of the remaining games. One might be Captain Falcon. There's the ninja throwing stars. Something with balloons? Did I forget one?
Do you know what I wondered in Mario? Is one character or set of characters faster? It seems like it would be too hard for the Toads to win if Mario was faster. There are also those Yoshi robots that chase Mario down.
I wasn't able to get much further in Zelda. The screen keeps saying to dodge, but I didn't see him dodging by pressing those triggers.
Metroid feels even harder in the ship. I guess it's weird how those first stages are ground-based enemies and you have to keep aiming at the ground. I think I depend more on the L stick to move me around than using the R stick to change the aim. Somehow, I think I also aim better by not zooming in.
Donkey Kong was a new experience. What a weird game! I guess I mean the cart where you're kind of an egg balanced on top and trying not to crack yourself open. What's the deal with blowing into the microphone? I don't even think I was able to clear every area of the first stage.
The more I thought about Monita, maybe she got her name from being a monitor? Her tutorials might be done now, which feels like a shame, because I forget how to spend my 107 coins to win new prizes.
Overall, it just feels like it might be time to play a more dedicated one player game, or to get more controllers and see what it's like with several people playing "Nintendo Land." I feel like "Wii Sports (Resort)" was a little more fun without needing a bunch of extra controllers. Then again, I can't really tell you the last time I played either one! There were definitely some games I favored more than the rest.
"Disney InfINity 2.0" still feels like a logical second game. After that, I wasn't sure, because I might break the pattern of how I bought the games (which already happened with buying "Madden NFL '13" first, "NinTENdo Land" tenth, and then playing "Nintendo Land" first. Probably a dedicated Mario game third, like "Super Mario 3D World"?
