Second, how does it take a while to calm down after playing this Zelda game? I'm not sure if it's just this particular game.
I only came back to it a few days ago (9/12). My save file was dated 7/7. That kind of makes sense, because I wanted to test out "Super Smash Bros." in July, and then "Mario Kart 8" in August.
Well, I was coming back to the game, not really knowing what tasks I had been working on in July. Dungeons are kind of obvious, and I'm at the last one before the final castle. Even so, it's hard to tell how much of the game is left, assuming that I'll keep chipping away at several side quests. Just to name a few of those:
Pictures, pictures, pictures (of almost every animal, boss, or person in the game)
Pieces of heart
Trading quest/decorations
Dig up every buried treasure/Find every treasure map
A collection quest in between now and the end stage of the game
Technically, I think you can map the whole ocean/Great Sea from an early point of the game. I was mainly pacing myself and taking it a few squares at a time. I knew that all I had left was a reef (cyclops) and the "Tower of the Gods."
I believe I had 73 of the figures in the Nintendo Gallery at the time of my last save, with a few more pictures saved in the camera. I think I've handed in 69 of them, which could add up to 77 statues.
I should have ALL of the weapons now. That definitely took a while. There are still some islands that aren't worth visiting unless you can use your chained "grappling hook" item.
Speaking of getting that item, the mini-boss is either cool or annoying. There's one main guy, where you definitely need his picture (he doesn't exist in other parts of the game), but they keep throwing other "static" at you. There are basically two of the same kind of enemy who "snipe" at you with long range fireballs. Then, you can't kill off the other foot solider-type enemies who chase you along the ground, because they'll keep respawning and alternating between two enemy types (sometimes with EXTRA guards to mess up your targeting). [Even after I beat the main ringleader, it wouldn't award me the treasure chest without beating yet another foot soldier who was still alive!!] I could barely get a good photo of the main baddie, and once I got two acceptable shots, I just decided those were "good enough." I'm used to trying to center and frame pretty stationary characters (other than how they keep rotating their heads). It's still amazing to think about 50 more enemies or characters where I haven't taken their picture yet! I think five of those are "legendary" (only from a cutscene where you can't use your camera) and they depend on the phase of the moon.
Probably the goal where I feel WAY behind are these heart containers or extra pieces of heart. I only have 12 containers this deep into the game? You should probably be able to get 20. That means I must be leaving 20 to 30 pieces of heart scattered around the overworld.
My wallet is already stuffed with 5000 rupees, so I'm not sure if this game just litters way too many of those along the ground or if I should be spending them to free up some space. Bombs and arrows typically get dropped by enemies, too, so why would I need to pay rupees for them? The most expensive task in the game might be decoding certain treasure maps, but I know I've done that at least twice already.
Oh, yeah! There are also special golden statues that appear in one place when you rescue them from dungeons. I haven't even started that collection yet, despite reaching spots in dungeons where it was kind of obvious something belongs there, or else they created dead ends for no apparent reason.
Those might be most of my thoughts and reactions. This final temple's theme is "wind," even though I seem to see a snake pattern on the doors (hint, hint, about the boss?). I'm actually trying to think of how wind plays a role! There are some switches where you can guess about how to weigh them down, but then it's not obvious that you take off your boots to let them spring you into the air. Then, the process of springing you into the air seems copied from the flower buds earlier in the game, but they just used a different "mechanic" for this dungeon. There's one room where I had to float in kind of an upside down V pattern through some metal barriers (with updrafts in between platforms). The central shaft of the dungeon seems to connect with three or four floors. The way you turn on a "fan" effect to get you to the top is by planting some seeds for young trees? How does that make sense? That's where I ran out of time and decided to save.
I should be around the 68 hour mark, so I'll assume that 70 hours won't be enough to finish the first quest. That's hard to believe, when one site that tells you how long it typically takes to finish a game shows other people completing the story in maybe 30 hours, or going 100% in 55 or 60.
