I still want to read the instructions at some point! There was something I saw online from Prima Games where they give you tips. You can blow into the microphone to reveal otherwise hidden blocks. I've noticed other effects, some of which range from snow falling off of trees, to the fairy pixie people making a weird sound (it kind of feels perverted somehow - the fairy making the sound because you blew on her). One question I haven't answered for myself is whether you can play by yourself with an alternate controller. It seems like the game says you can in the startup screen. Then, I saw a menu option about changing controllers. I'm just wondering what abilities you might lose from not using the GamePad. Technically, hidden blocks are always there, even when you can't use blowing to reveal them.
There's also a way to tap enemies, which seems like an easy kill. I suppose you can make it harder by NOT touching them. I wondered what would happen in the stage where you definitely need to touch the screen and blow if you're not using a GamePad (it's not even available, or those features get assigned to buttons?).
I still need to find a third star in World 1-1! They made those pretty challenging somehow. I know about catching the rabbits (which first started in "Super Mario 64"?). Other than that, I think World 1 is almost completed. One thing that bugs my OCD is how I wish that I was reaching the top of the flag pole with regular Mario's jumping ability. When you climb up with the cat suit, or Peach just floats to the top, it feels cheaper. It looks like there are ways to see whether you've cleared everything in a level (gold flag, green sparkling star, ...).
I guess it was around the second half of World 2 where the game already started to get "hard" for me. I needed a few tries to figure out that world with all the cherries. It's pretty creative, and they actually designed it for you to be able to get all of the Mario clones to the goal.
In World 3, I think I had my first Game Over. All that seems to do is to reset your life counter and bring back some of the helpful places on the map (slot machine game and Toad houses). Overall, I would say only World 1 really kept up a theme that matches the overworld map. World 2 has a familiar sand/desert theme, but I'm trying to remember the actual desert stages. World 2-2 might be underground, so it could fit almost anywhere. The ones with touch and blow or the cherries don't look sandy in my mind.
World 3 starts off with the annoying snowmen totem poles. I think they're supposed to be like Pokey from other games? They're too tall to really jump on the head sometimes, and you also want to avoid the spikes on the body sections (which disappear somehow when you knock him apart).
In World 3, it also feels like I'm not getting that many stars per level (on the first clearance). In that snowman level, I think I found them all, but I can't figure out the technique for reaching the third one. It's up in a wall cavity. So far, I haven't been able to keep the cat suit or the propeller block until that part of the stage. Then I can't tell how to use the propeller block on the GamePad. In "Super Mario Bros. Wii," I just remember shaking the Wii Remote like crazy.
I've been able to use all four characters now, but it's hard to tell which courses are best suited to each one. In the stage where they try to make you panic with only 100 seconds, you don't even need to rush. There's a star in an opposite direction of where you might expect, and I always get to the goal on time. I had to use Peach to touch the switch with her logo, and then she was also the best for floating past the moving blocks.
So, yeah. I thought there was much more on my mind. It's just an interesting combination of ideas from what feels like EVERY OTHER Mario game I've played on a console. There's no Yoshi yet, though. I'm not sure what that golden striped leaf does. I've seen a Racoon Mario, without really knowing why Racoon powers helped in that particular stage. That's the weird thing with the power-ups. I see a lot of places for being a cat in World 3, but it's like they make you go back to an earlier stage to get a cat bell. The other powers look like a way to distract you or get you to give up the cat ability.
Up next, I wanted to try the "NES Remix Pack," if that's the correct name. I've only played the demo in a Best Buy store, but that was addicting. After that, I was thinking a Zelda game ("Wind Waker"?), and games six through eight could probably be played in the order that I remember buying them ("Captain Toad," "Super Smash Bros. for Wii U," "Mario Kart 8" as number eight).
