Regarding the controllers, I might actually prefer the GamePad? At first, I thought it was just because of the maps and assigning items to your X, Y, and R buttons. Even though the map and your items can be viewed on the GamePad, I feel like this game (maybe most of the Zelda games) still makes that process a little complicated. If you used to be on the map, and then you changed something about your inventory, you might still be on the inventory screen, and you'd need to switch back to the map, despite how it's "open" all the time (normally, you need to pause).
Another thing is probably how I'm STILL getting used to the four "face" buttons (of the Pro controller). I need to be pressing B to use my sword, and I hit X or A? There are uses for both the R "shoulder" button, and the ZR "trigger." What messes me up even more is how the ZR is a different shape and feeling on the Pro controller than it is on the GamePad. For items like the grappling hook, I think the Pro controller is a little bit slower, because you need to "aim" it with the right stick. On the GamePad, I believe I just point at something with the motion controls. It's almost like the best of a Wii remote and a traditional controller.
I hope I'd get used to any control scheme over time. I forget the "standard" number of items you could assign to the C buttons in a game like "Ocarina of Time" (three, with C up always being Navi?), but it seems to be three in this game, between X, Y, and R. If that's not complex enough, your D-pad has different things mapped to it, which seem to expand when you're sailing around.
So, the first dungeon. Once I figured out that you're supposed to cut or burn ropes (not even noticing if I accidentally did either one for 75% of the dungeon), the other "puzzles" were either a repeat of that idea, or not too hard. There's just one place where I was standing in front of a locked door and it wasn't obvious what to do next. Thankfully, I had been watching some YouTube videos, reviewing "Twilight Princess," and one of them happened to point out Link's eyes in "The Wind Waker." If you swivel the camera angle to look at his face, his eyes are sometimes pointing at the "solution" to your current puzzle. How cool is that?!!
The first boss looked AWESOME in terms of art. I didn't understand the strategy for beating him/her/it. Part of the issue had been how a dragon lives on the top of this island, and its tail hangs down through a hole. It was annoyed, because the temple boss kept pulling on the tail. So, now that I'm in the room where the tail is visible, you want ME to latch on and pull the dragon down? How does that make less of a bully than the boss? After that, "phase two" didn't feel like I had to do something complex. The creature kind of exposes its own weak spot, and then my sword or something else was damaging him without much effort on my part (or it felt that way).
In the cutscenes after you clear the temple boss, it's pretty neat. One surprise is how the dragon speaks in the Hylian language. Thanks to reading a post on Miiverse, I believe that it's possible to learn the Hylian alphabet symbols by playing "Twilight Princess HD" and collecting a bunch of stamps. That's not quite the whole story, though. You've probably heard of the word "translate," right? I'm pretty sure that idea is to take words spelled in a common alphabet and to convert their meaning between two languages. When you have a different alphabet, I believe the word is "transliterate," where you spell those words in letters that belong to a different alphabet. Like, in Greek, I wonder if my name transliterates to: Upsilon, Upsilon, iota, lambda, lambda (two capital U letters, i, l, l). Assuming I already knew the Hylian alphabet, IGN's wiki guide seems to add ANOTHER complication. The letters might only spell out a pronunciation of an idea from the Japanese language, so you'd need to transliterate PLUS translate (and I only know about two or three Japanese words)! It still bugs my OCD to be seeing a foreign alphabet and not knowing what it means.
You get this item from a goddess, but it's not really explained why you need it. I'll assume there are three of them (Din, Farore, and Nayru), like in previous games.
I wanted to stay on that island and do more "side quests," but there only seems to be one where I've sorted 23 letters, and I need 25 before the time limit. My rupees are already FULL (to 500), so it didn't sound helpful to make a path to the 200 rupee chest in the wiki guide. I already learned how to change the wind. It's just weird how they FORCE you to learn that, or else the boat refuses to sail anywhere. To go off on a little tangent, what are the differences between music timing? I've seen 3/4, 4/4, and 6/8 written on the staffs, but if 3/4 might mean three beats per four seconds, then 6/8 should be the same thing. This game has 6/4 as a third option. I'm starting to play the music by listening to the beat itself, rather than paying attention to the graphic of a metronome.
This time, out on the sea, there weren't many new areas to explore. It started to get dark and I saw a thunderstorm. That reminded me of how "Breath of the Wild" sometimes electrocutes you by having lightning strike your metal weapons. I'm not sure if this game would do anything similar. It was frustrating how the boat kept telling me, "We can't steer off course, because it's too early to visit anywhere else."
Well, you get to this other place, and now there's a fourth or fifth collectible. The venus flytrap things drop spiky "seeds," and Link picks them up. Other than that, the annoying enemy that spits seeds was there (Octorok?). You eventually meet an old friend? It's just that I was thinking, that is NOT the Deku Tree with a mustache that I respected from "OoT." It looks more like an ogre or something with tooth decay (one sticking up from his lower jaw). You have to help him, and the game had to tell me the strategy. Then, it's kind of an annoying "tutorial" section. See these flowers that shoot you out like a cannon? Try to link those together and get progressively higher. Then, the item that I reached gave me a magic power gauge without even explaining why I should be able to do magic! Why does this item even drain your magic energy?!! You're STILL not done with the tutorial, because your magic gauge won't let you take a straight path for the next temple. You have to stop off at a lower island, and then cut grass for more magic (which the game keeps giving you as you run low), plus, time your jump to enter a skinny cylinder of a tornado/cyclone, updraft, and then you might actually make it across. Even before that, I kept trying to change the wind direction, and I didn't know where to point it, or how to tell if I'm southeast, etc, of that landmark (meaning a northwest wind to help you out).
For all that trouble, you do get to another temple (back to back temples, other than the tutorial parts?), and I can see why they wanted you to practice the cannonball flowers. The most annoying enemies are actually the green slime who barely hurt you, but I guess they shrink down to force you to use another item to make them stand up for a sword strike? The mini-boss was a pretty obvious strategy, using the item you picked up to fly to that dungeon. Then it was getting to be 11:30, so I saved and quit.
There are still some other things about this game that I either missed being told in a tutorial (if your grapple point doesn't swing you towards a platform, just climb to the top instead?), or that I had to learn from the wiki guide. I just wonder why it feels so "inconsistent"? When the game could directly give you an item, you have to follow the tutorial to reach it? Then, for something that will get you stuck in a temple and frustrated (cut down a bridge or climb a rope?), they seem pretty silent.
I read a little bit ahead in the guide, trying not to "spoil" myself too much. I technically know that there are bombs (right now, limited to a flower, or they cost 10,000 rupees). Apparently, I can get those in another island or two. My wallet has become a problem already, where I'm "collecting" more rupees, but the counter stays at 500. There haven't been many reasons to spend rupees yet, or at least not large amounts of them (100 - 300 at a time).
I'm wondering if "Breath of the Wild" would sort of be "heaven" for me. If I want to sail all over the ocean (and why shouldn't I, if I know how to change the wind to blow in that direction?), then the only limiting factor in "BotW" might be that they put impossibly strong enemies to guard an area and keep you out before you're meant to go to that place.
