I've gotten far enough to where it feels like a good story. Even if the first two dungeons haven't been hard, the boss battles at least look AMAZING. Beyond that, it's hard to tell what you're doing in the middle of a fight!
Like, the second boss is trying to eat a little creature. That sets off your anger. Then, it has way too many "weak spots" you're supposed to attack. The pattern or the weakness isn't that hard to figure out, since you've already used a similar strategy to solve puzzles in the second half of the dungeon. I only had to use that dungeon's weapon and my sword (which might have been optional) to defeat this monster. I'm wondering if that boss finally "killed" me, because I kept losing hearts, and I know I went into the chamber with a bottled fairy, but then the bottle was empty after the fight (like it revived me). I would have died a few times, but they seem to keep growing patches of grass that refill your hearts.
After that, you get a second "pearl" from a "goddess." I have no idea why certain characters have these pearls, how they got them, or why they would be a reward for completing a dungeon? One was kind of explained as belonging to a character's grandmother, who just passed away (then why give it to a stranger like me?). The second one was kind of a gift to show gratitude for rescuing a little guy. I get that there's a pattern with several of these games, where you need three items at the start of the journey to unlock the next phase. It might be explained in a future cutscene.
Pretty much, after all of that chaos, I couldn't find many places to explore near the forest dungeon. There's a ladder, but it's not at a convenient height. Then I wasn't really interested in climbing up high with the cannon flowers (I got tired of seeing them in the dungeon).
I'm wondering how many tasks in this game require an empty bottle? I finally got ONE of those in the dragon cavern (fire temple). At first, you have to use it on the bomb flowers. I trapped a fairy in there. An online guide kind of "spoiled" how you can take bottled water from the enchanted forest (different from plain water) elsewhere. I think that was eventually explained by another character, and I can remember "Skyward Sword" using a similar idea. I caught a firefly in a bottle, but I'm not sure if the character who needed to see it in the GameCube version needs to see it this time, or where to bring the silly thing. Meanwhile, I can't buy any potion or use all the "jelly" I collected in the forest dungeon without emptying my bottle first. My issue with potions in most of these games is how you rarely go without finding hearts and magic energy everywhere (enemy drops, cutting the grass), so it feels like a waste of money.
I've kind of wandered around the map a little, treating the Great Sea like an "open world." There's an island which is sort of like a pool with lounge chairs ("beach cabana"?). I think I spoiled what might happen there from reading the guide. There's a really small island with a tower, and then Tingle or his twin is at the top. I'm not sure what to make of the Tingle character. There are these kind of squares with only one entrance/exit, and then I think you're supposed to bomb all of the cannons in the walls? I didn't have the bombs until recently.
As you're sailing around, the ocean isn't that dangerous, which I kind of like. Now and then, I see some sharks, and I throw a ranged weapon at them.
After the forest, I think you keep getting told to visit this certain "Greatfish Isle." As far as I can tell, there's not much to do there. You're just supposed to see a swirl of clouds, how the rain doesn't stop, that everything is "ruined" (I never saw this place in an "unruined" state!), and then a character meets you there for some reason. I think we were supposed to find Jabun, and the idea is that he's not at that location anymore. It sort of feels like a distracting event to move the story along, though. I used a seagull to fly into the dark clouds, and the texture didn't look fully "HD."
Since the beginning of this game, I've KNOWN there was an area on my home island that's blocked by a huge stone, and bombs usually clear those away in other games. That made it too obvious what was coming next in this story. I remember the bomb shop guy being pretty rude, but I didn't like how the pirates treated him. In the first place, it was cool to finally "reunite" with the pirates, after playing two dungeons without them. You can finally go to Tetra's cabin, and it makes you wonder why she would have certain pictures on the wall (I don't want to spoil those). In most of these Zelda games, it feels creepy to keep going into people's bedrooms or opening the door to every house!
There's another rope game, which is still annoying and takes multiple efforts. Then, a pirate just GIVES you the bombs. Tetra makes it sound like, OK, well, now you have to race us back to your home island. The catch is, the pirates won't even be leaving until sunrise of the next day. What I didn't know is that, you keep sailing (probably five or six squares South on a 7 x 7 map), and the sun doesn't rise. Then, your boat kind of tells you, "Well, I guess something's wrong with the weather or the sun, and you were always going to make it here before the pirates." I think I still got to talk to a few people on Windfall Island before I left, and you probably have to visit over and over to finish every quest. There's one guy who sounds like a cameraman ("Lenzo"), and he tells you about pictures in his gallery. I was just like, I've already been to that place, and you're acting as if it's new information . He has a picture of my island for whatever reason.
On my home island, I kind of understand the family relationships now. There seem to be four main huts. The one with two brothers was where I got my sword. You can go back and "train" with the guy on the lower floor. I forget his name, but he has shark jaws mounted all over the wall. He wants you to land 100 blows before he can take away three hearts. I don't know how the game counts, but it looks like he blocks all but a few special sword techniques. By the third time, I had racked up 141 "blows," but the game didn't even stop us at 100 or display a counter. This man still won't tell me about a Knight's Crest, even though I have a few of them. That kind of got spoiled for me from the online guide. It's annoying how characters will tell you to ask them about something, and then it's a case of, "Well, actually, you need 20 of those for me to tell you anything."
My grandma was just sleeping with no way to wake her up, so I saved the game and left the likely "Fairy Fountain" for next time.
I think the only other weird thing where I might not have enough information is that a few islands or indoor areas have started to display these round things on the floor. They might be purple, and then there's almost a square "crown" pattern around the edges, or like the top of a rook in a chess game. I check them, and they say to decorate with something "joyful." So, I pull out the butterfly pendant, and it says, "That doesn't do anything here."
Overall, it's a neat game. I felt like my "OCD" approach to the two dungeons kind of slowed down the pacing. But then, this next part of the story was also a little annoying, where you sail back to places you've already been, possibly to see how they've "changed," or because that's the place to trigger the next cutscene. When you finally trigger the scenes, the writing is GREAT, but it starts to feel a little like a repeating formula. Then, I'm thinking of how, in "Breath of the Wild," some players felt like it was too light on "story." That's hard to tell without playing it. Plus, there's supposed to be a new story when they release some DLC later this year.
Happy gaming!
