I'm trying to remember all that I've done since the last review. I put Merida into the game as the first female and the first Disney/Pixar character. It made me wonder how many redheads are in these games! From the 2013 game, I can think of Syndrome (a male villain from "The Incredibles"). The Jessie cowgirl from "Toy Story" has reddish hair. Princess Anna from "Frozen" has red with one white streak (I won't spoil that part of the movie). Merida sort of has orange hair. Then, I think of Black Widow from The Avengers. There might also be a cartoon kid, Phineas.
Merida is a different experience than Iron Man. She can't just hover and fly everywhere. Her melee seems to be an animation with several frames that might start with her bow and then finish with a sword that's usually concealed. She also uses the sword to guard/block. I think I figured out that mechanic now. You need to just hold the A button to stand still and guard. When A combines with a direction on the analog stick, Iron Man seems to hover dodge in that direction. I forget about Merida's dodge. She's an archer, but it doesn't really feel like it takes a while to draw the bow. I kind of think there should be a longer delay.
With Merida, I only played for about an hour, accomplishing a few things from My INterior and the introduction to the toy box. I'm getting better with the magic wand (it edits things that already exist in the toy box), but there aren't many choices for textures. You can turn things into orange construction equipment, something from "Mulan" (The Middle Kingdom?), and the default of Fairy Tale Kingdom, which is just grassy and natural-looking trees.
There was something I discovered when Merida leveled up. There's this weird icon that was next to Iron Man for a while. It seems like that's what tells you that there are skill points to spend in the skill tree. It's hard to describe that logo: a circle, with a white background, and then three angled vertical lines or arrows with another symbol above them. I also noticed that the number of your blue sparks transfers between each character. I've banked up about 10,000 so far.
When I switched back to Iron Man, I only planned to play for about 45 minutes (yeah, right!). There are special hexagon discs that come with the starter pack, and I used the one called "Assault on Asgard" (a separate game that's not quite a full play set). I think the technical term for that type of game is "tower defense." I'll try to describe what happens. The designers have already made a medium size "toy box" that kind of looks like Asgard (I only remember seeing a daylight version of Asgard in the second Thor movie). At first, you just play a demonstration that's way too easy. Then, you're in a room with probably all 12 or more levels of the game, but only one gate is unblocked. You enter that door, and it's the first stage. Basically, there's a space with two big entrances toward the North. Your "tower" are some things belonging to Odin (Thor's father), kind of suspended in a force field or a round cylinder/capsule. From that point, you need some strategy.
You'll be given coins worth a certain amount, and then a choice of defensive items. At the start, it seems like you can only buy a turret or a mine that causes a ranged freezing effect. You have to decide where to place those in "choke points" on the map. For the first wave of enemies, you can only buy two turrets, or one turret plus two mines, or four mines. The game will show you the path that the enemies are programmed to travel once they spawn from the big entrances.
After that, it's pretty much a crazy melee where the enemies are trying to damage your force field cylinder, if they can even get past you or the mines and the turrets. You collect more coins that are dropped by enemies, or you can carry little figures (they look almost like Lego people) to a goal and toss them through a ring to earn bonus money. I'm not sure who the little figure is supposed to be in these stages (maybe Odin or Loki - someone with horns on his helmet).
Even with a level 5 Iron Man (although not all of the skill points were allocated), I felt pretty weak against some of the enemy waves. You'll want to take out the flying drones first. Luckily, they're pretty weak. The foot soldiers are some kind of ice/frost creatures. I want to say frost giants, but most of them are about the same size as Iron Man. When you see the one that's about 400% your size with the long spear, you want to avoid those guys. I have no idea how some of them seem to run past me without me noticing. My strategy has been to fire the pulse bolts (ranged attack) and then try to pick those guys up from close range to throw them at a big crowd of their friends.
The second stage is a pretty simple layout to describe. This time, there's a big square, with your tower in the middle. The enemy doors are at the four compass directions. You're on a raised platform with two stairways from each direction (eight total) leading up to the central area. On the first attempt, I spent pretty heavily (on defense) trying to block the first wave. They only send enemies from one direction (North) into the arena. This time, there's a new defensive item (a solid barrier). The barriers don't last forever, but I think they can self-regenerate. On the first attempt, against the first wave, I was mostly focused on blocking a path in front of the door and flanking it with turrets. That pretty much turns the area into a shooting gallery. The thing is, then they come at you from North and South in the same wave, and it increases to all four directions. So, on the second playthrough, I put the barriers closer to the "tower" and put turrets in front of them at the top of the stairways. That seemed to produce a situation where the frost guys were charging up towards a turret, only to be blocked by two walls (side by side) if they wanted to damage the "tower." I wasn't able to replenish enough currency to place a turret at the top of every staircase, though. That seems to be where I'm stuck, or else I just barely beat part two before needing to power down.
I went back to the courtyard and wanted to check out the skill tree. As I mentioned, I'm up to level 7, but it's hard to tell how many skill points you earn per level. At first, it may have been one per level for the first five levels. I'm not sure of the math that gave me 10 points to spend. I doubt that you get 1 point for level 1, 2 points for level 2, and so on, since that would add up fast. It seems like the skill tree branches out in four directions. The North direction has a health meter increase as the first upgrade. After that, I think you can get self-regenerating shields (then what's the purpose of green sparks?). To the South, I hadn't equipped the special attack yet. The purple sparks build up that meter, but I don't even see it on the screen yet. Maybe you need to upgrade first? To the West, I was seeing things about increased throwing damage or melee damage. Then, in the East, it seems to focus on your ranged/alternate attack. In the case of Iron Man, I would love for his pulse bolts to do more damage and not have to be a melee character. I think I purchased the upgrades to have pulse bolts shoot from both hands (it starts with just one) and then the damage increase. When you're starting out, it seems like enemies can take about eight to ten of those shots before they finally die.
Then the tablet started showing a red battery light, so I powered down. There's a leaderboard for each stage of this game disc. When I cleared phase 1, it took about 14 or 15 minutes, and I was ranked in the 20,000 range. I wonder how they get those scores, since I'm not logged in with a Disney account. Ideally, I think you'd want to destroy most of the enemy waves with a level 20 character (that's the cap for this game) to get anywhere near the lead. In stage two, I think I ranked in the 10,000 range. Did I get better, or is the game just harder with so many hordes to defeat?
In the actual movies, I'm not sure if Iron Man has ever traveled to Asgard yet (probably not). It's weird how they let you play as Iron Man. I may have read somewhere that the Disney characters don't work with the Asgard game, but I haven't tried it yet. Have you watched any of the Thor movies? The rumor is that they don't make as much money at the box office. I'm just thinking, why would you pay attention to Thor? There's Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, and Kat Dennings. Jaimie doesn't seem that well-known yet, and she's totally different from her character on a show ("Blind Spot"?) where she has a short hair cut and woke up on the street somewhere covered in tattoos, but not knowing how they got on her body. Kat is annoying and way too sarcastic on the show "Two Broke Girls." It makes me wonder if she's that offensive in real life. The movies seem to have good themes of family and conflict with a "blended" family, though.
I'm not sure how Iron Man would play with those new skill upgrades!! It's getting pretty late here, but the game was trying to draw me in for two more hours of action.
Tomorrow/later today, I think I might switch to charging up the Pro Controller and also the "Super Mario 3D World" game. I haven't played "Super Mario 3D Land" on a portable system, so I'm guessing that the series might feel new to me? A few areas looked a little bit like "Super Mario Galaxy," but I can't remember the last time I played that game, either!
So, I guess, look for that review next? I'm not really sure about an overall strategy for "InfINity 2.0." I kind of wanted to play the first game (which isn't downloaded yet) to work on leveling up those characters or seeing what community toy boxes can be downloaded. I have up to 23 characters that should work in 2.0, but I wasn't sure if the figures from the first game come into 2.0 with their levels intact (even if they did, I would try to start over?).
Better post this and get some rest. Just know that InfINity is a series that can hold my attention, and that the Wii U has been a fun console to this point.
