I kind of knew that there might be an update before I could actually play. This time, I planned on 30 minutes or more, depending on the size. Our connection should be able to download about 1 gigabyte per hour, and these games tend to run pretty large. Actually, it was about nine minutes for the download and a few more to install the update.
Now, my title screen says 1.0.5 in the corner. I wonder what that means for the overall version/title then? If this is game 2.0, then why version 1.0.5?
Then I waited a few hours before playing. It seems to take about 35 seconds for the title screens. I forget if that's slower or faster than the first game on the Wii. When you first start out a new file, it must take you on this long demo. It's kind of neat, but I don't know if you can skip past all of that. You'll see Donald Duck trying to tackle a star and then not being able to control Buzz Lightyear's jetpack. You get to play as Aladdin (a figure I own), at least in the area that looks like the palace from his movie. He enters another area where Tinkerbell seems to take over. It barely feels like you have to maneuver her, and I guess it's a way to show how flying works in the game. You get to be Merida on a horse. I think the last part was climbing a wall as Stitch (not sure what kind of creature he is).
I put Iron Man onto the base first. I wasn't sure what to expect, because there's a "Toy Box Launch" mode in the first game, which is basically a field around Cinderella's castle, and that possibly opens up to other areas (those become separate toy boxes on Wii, maybe because of memory limits). Here, it's like you're in a weird plaza which doesn't seem very full. There's a big logo, and then a few columns and small lamp posts. You have to talk to some of the characters in that area, and then other things will start happening. When I talked to the Fairy Godmother, I think that opened up a walled off area that looks like a forest or a field. There are some of the powerful omnidroids from "The Incredibles," and I wasn't that great at taking them out. The last one is the kind that shoots a laser beam and tries to track your movement. I saw instructions for how to dodge, but I remember a "blocking" mechanic in the other game where you could hold the "-" button on the remote. I was playing on the GamePad for this whole session, so the buttons for other things had changed, too. Your regular attack is X, and your ranged ability seems to be ZR.
I spoke to about four of those characters, and the "toy box" kept expanding. One time, it opened up a set of skyscrapers. Since I was Iron Man, and he has "flying" ability, it felt too easy to gather the capsules of sparks on the rooftops. I almost wouldn't call Iron Man's version of "flying" a real flight ability, assuming I was doing it correctly. It's a little like one of the packs from "Toy Story" where you can boost up in the air, but he stays hovering and then it's hard to tell if you ever run out of time to stay hovering. I couldn't even figure out how to exit the hovering, other than hitting the A button or doing a dive bomb attack with X. Once you get to a certain height, I also don't know how to descend without canceling with A or X. During the flight parts in that area, I wasn't sure if I saw some "screen tearing." The graphics are definitely an upgrade from the Wii, but they didn't really WOW me somehow.
I wanted to spend some time with a feature called INterior(s). The best way I can describe it is how a sort of house rises out of an area with a tree trunk. At the start, it's not very impressive. I had to keep talking to what looked like a miniature grandfather clock from "Beauty and the Beast." Before you know it, you've put paint on the walls, placed some furniture, and invited "guests." For now, it seems like the only paint you're allowed to use is generic InfINity (kind of a cross between beige and yellow), fairy tale/fantasy, or "Tomorrowland," which looks a little too metallic. You'll be completing those small tasks, and it keeps saying that you unlocked these four or five new things. I could barely pay attention to all the new announcements.
The GamePad seems to have a different display than the main screen, but I'm not sure if it adds much to the game yet. The "IN" part of the logo looks pixelated in the top left corner. There's an icon for "Feats" that I haven't tapped yet. In the middle, you have your item inventory, which overlays on the TV if you press L. Sometimes, I think if you pause, you'll see an icon that talks about playing with just the GamePad (meaning "off TV"?). I'd have to check the icons on the Blu-ray case, but I think the Pro controller or even a Wii Remote might also control the game. I mean, otherwise, how could you have local multiplayer with only one GamePad? I almost forgot that, during the INterior "missions," there were times when I was editing things with the magic wand, and that process showed up on the GamePad (without really telling you to look down at it). In the Wii game, I just remember those graphics being an overlay.
Other than that, I think a few aspects of the first game work differently this time. In the original, I do remember collecting "sparks," but I believe they were always blue. The "currency" system seemed to be limited to individual play sets, and it would be different in each set. You could only use it inside the sets to buy toys that were relevant to that play set. This time, I think blue sparks switch from being experience points to being "currency," and that number looks separate from the experience meter/gauge. Mine is already at 3,000 or above. I believe there's someone you talk to and then you can buy toys. For experience, you need the yellow sparks. I've already collected enough to be at level 4 (the maximum might be 20). If it's like the first game, maybe up to level 5 goes pretty fast, but then you need several hours to reach higher levels. As if that weren't enough to remember, are there orange sparks? I'm not sure. The purple ones affect your special attack meter, but I haven't used them yet. Green sparks are for health, and it's hard to tell how much health you have. There's a green gauge that only seems to appear around green sparks or when you take damage. To me, it looks like the game is asking you to press the "+" button (health must be a "+" icon?). Even when you "die," it just seems to reset your health gauge without much of a penalty.
That's about all I got to do for today (not even trying the "Avengers" play set yet). There are at least a few things I would have to learn when I play again. One would be the "Skill Tree." In the first game, despite having the level system, it was hard to tell how you improved by reaching a new level. This time, I think it's more like certain "dungeon crawler" RPGs that I've played, like the "X-Men Legends" series. You can decide which power-up or new ability to add, probably from one or two options, until you follow a certain path, and each path might keep "branching out" to other options. There probably isn't a way to get every extra skill from just 20 levels, so I'd have to think about how to build up each character. Second should probably be that "Toy Store." I'd imagine that it might be similar to buying items in the original play sets, but with everything available in one place. Third might be the "Hall of Heroes." That was kind of neat in the first game, despite how it looked VERY limited on the Wii. I'm not sure how many total characters were in that game, but I only bought 11 of the figures. The best you can do is to add a blue ribbon and then maybe a laurel wreath above their head. On HD consoles, I think the statues are bronze, silver, and gold. The other neat thing was how the Hall of Heroes itself started to change as you completed more missions in the play sets and won gold stars. I got mine to the point where it had full walls and something going around the top of the walls. On the floor, you can see all of the power discs that you've loaded into the game, or even a description of discs you might want to buy. Too bad they come in "blind" foil bags with too many doubles!
Other than that, it wanted me to log in somehow when I first started, but I skipped past that part. The servers are supposed to be online until March 3rd of next year, but I'm not sure if you can still download other people's toy box creations. You probably can't upload any of your own boxes anymore. Despite how this series only lasted a little over 2 1/2 years, I can see how it might take an "infinite" number of hours to collect every disc, level up every character, customize your INterior, and build new toy boxes. In my collection, I believe I only have 12 characters that are new to this game (8 Marvel, 4 Disney/animated). The first 11 (Disney/animated/Jack Sparrow) can also enter this game.
