One thing that's been kind of overwhelming for me is how I want to talk to EVERY nonplayable person who appears on these islands. At Windfall Island, I started to make a list of about 15 people and what they're all about, and then I just stopped keeping track. There are a few almost useless interactions ("We're talking about adult stuff, little kid. Mind your own business."). There are some mandatory conversations you need to have with merchants or someone in a jail cell.
It would be hard to discuss some other parts without "spoilers," so I wonder who else hasn't played the game yet or might be reading this. One awkward part is how your sailboat TALKS. There's an animal-shaped head, and it even swivels like a "neck" joint. For some reason, it asks you to find a sail, when it's small enough to where you could probably row around with a pair of oars. It keeps rushing you to find the sail, even though I spent lots of time on the island. There's a Battleship style game that's kind of funny. The guy in charge acts bored or depressed until you offer to play. Then he's making faces or sound effects. You only get 24 guesses, and nine of them would go towards "sinking" three squids (sizes 4, 3, and 2 squares). The man running the game says "Sploosh" for a miss and I forget the word for a hit ("KAPOW!"??).
When I finally found the sail, it felt "accidental." I had pretty much interviewed everyone on the island. They were pointing you towards releasing someone from jail. That must've been the LAST door I checked. Even after setting him loose (where are the prison guards?), I had to talk to a certain merchant a second time, and I have no idea what led me back to his area. I was "stubborn," though, and really didn't want to consult an online guide.
Once you can start sailing, the wind generally blows you towards one specific island. I kept trying to take detours anyway. One vessel was some guys in diving helmets telling me how to dredge up treasure from the ocean floor. That was nice of them, but I didn't even have the item yet for digging underwater. There was an interesting island where you were tempted to "cut the grass." Then you could see a crawlspace near the big weird rock or shell structure. Inside, you dropped into a "secret grotto," as I think they were called in "Ocarina of Time." I did get a helpful piece of heart inside, but another tunnel was blocked up with a boulder, so I'd STILL have to come back later.
When I finally stopped messing around and sailed to the right island, the boat gave me this music rod. I messed that up so many times and wondered if you could skip the tutorial. According to an online guide, you're not trying to play a note exactly when a set of lights goes to the middle of a graphic, but you'd need to be pressing that direction already when the lights come to the middle. Maybe now I could do it in less attempts?!! I liked the ocarina better in OoT, because I think it was all buttons (A, B, and C cluster), with you playing at whatever tempo you liked. I eventually learned that there's a song you play to change the wind direction (now that the game practically FORCED me to this island?!!).
The story of this island is how a dragon is getting bullied by a dungeon boss, and there are a race of bird people. The one young girl is good-looking. I'm not sure what that says about me when you consider that she basically has a duck bill, big RED eyes, and a long ponytail. I felt bad throwing her into a wall several times and making her see stars. The game explains you have to throw her with a tailwind (it keeps changing direction), but not that, hey, stand on this elevated ramp FIRST.
After that, it took me a while to figure out the "puzzle" just to enter this cavern. You're awarded an empty bottle. Based on other games, I know you can scoop up water. Only once you do that, the game helps you by saying, "Look for something wilted and revive it." Do you think maybe those bomb flowers could use some water? Then, there's a big boulder blocking up a spring?
I'm surprised how much time I spent inside that dungeon without completing it. There are four floors on the map. At first, when you're unlocking these weird "cauldrons" that warp you around, they don't seem useful. Then, you realize how much the game wants you to backtrack. The puzzles weren't all that hard, because they've used similar concepts in other Zelda games. About the most complex thing was to light a stick from a torch and throw the burning stick across a gap to burn away a wood barrier. Some of the barriers look like a sword should cut them, but it was as if the game was programmed to make you burn them or use an enemy weapon. I also kind of see things from "Breath of the Wild," where enemies drop weapons, and you could take them out with something besides your sword.
It was coming to a point where I had been playing "too long," plus I had maybe 1.25 hearts, AND the GamePad battery light was red, AND I couldn't even guess the solution to a puzzle, so I saved and quit. Then I "cheated" with the online guide and realized how I probably would NOT have started chopping the rope bridge I was standing on to drop to the lower floor. Maybe the ONLY clue as to that being the solution is the way the room below you has a dirt section that's only as wide as the bridge? Without getting to the lower floor, I don't think you can solve the next set of puzzles, because that room has a door I haven't opened yet.
There's just SO MUCH going on in this game. Link is collecting "joy pendants" (little butterflies), skull necklaces for some reason, golden feathers, ... I was at a Chu Chu jelly shop where the owner wouldn't sell me a potion without a bottle. Well, I got a bottle on this other island, but there's a dungeon to finish before I could sail back to the shop! One character wanted a golden feather for his girlfriend. One woman was interested in the joy pendants. I don't really mind the backtracking, but it's annoying how you only get these items AFTER someone tells you that you need them. Already, I know that my home island and the grass-cutting island have areas that are blocked with heavy boulders.
I'm kind of changing my mind on the graphics. I guess they didn't change all that much (from the first day of playing the game), but I'm more used to the art style, and the HD must make a difference. Link makes some weird faces, or you'll see him just staring intently at someone and nodding along. There are rude characters. There are eccentric characters. The weird spirituality kind of bugs me, since there's a frog on a cloud calling itself a "god," or speaking like it controls the wind. The music is familiar, but I'm not sure if that's a bad thing. Are there games in this series where they've created a whole new soundtrack? The "overworld" looks like I'm going to be exploring it FOREVER, but it's strange that the map can still be a square. Even in "Breath of the Wild," I think it's a square (a really BIG square).
I'll have to keep going and see where the game leads.
