Overall, I was wondering how much I've played the Mario game series, and whether I've achieved 100% completion in each game (not just taking all the warps and finishing the final castle). Here would be my summary:
"Super Mario Bros." (NES): I don't think we owned it long enough to clear every level without using warps. Didn't you also have to do it in one sitting, due to the lack of save files? I know how there's one confusing part of World 8-1 or 8-2 with a big jump and a beanpole vine where I kept getting stuck.
"Super Mario Bros." (SNES and Wii remakes): I finally beat it on the Wii one day, but that was the only time in my memory. You get to that final fortress, and it's like, why are there pipes and an underwater area? That was probably a full 32 level clearance. Once you do that, I think it labels your worlds with one star, but do they change or get any harder?
"Super Mario Bros. 2" (any format: NES, SNES, GBA, etc.): I've definitely cleared all 20 levels too many times to count. This would probably rank as the easiest game I've played in the series. My reasoning is that you start out with the ability to make one mistake before repeating a level, and there are too many ways to earn up to three mistakes per level, plus that slot machine thing that grants extra lives (although I haven't figured out the timing to get something good on every turn). Another factor was probably how you could mitigate some of the more difficult jumping stages with Peach or Luigi. I've tried to intentionally make the game harder by using just one character and not getting the extra mushrooms or the coins. Under those rules, I'm dying A LOT, and I doubt I've been able to clear everything with just Mario. The final factor might be how not many of the boss fights are especially hard. I mean, two of them are kind of repeats as I recall (except in the GBA remake).
"Super Mario Bros. 3" (multiple formats): I've definitely cleared the final fortress and rescued Peach. It feels like I would have done that over 10 times. Here's the catch. I know that I haven't cleared every level in the game, because when I don't warp, I always get stuck somewhere in World 7 and I run out of time. There are also parts of maybe World 5 and definitely World 8 where I just give up and "cheat" with the P-wing or the cloud item.
"Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels" (SMB2 in Japan) [SNES and Wii]: I haven't skipped any levels, but the last one I remember clearing was 7-3. Sometimes, it just feels like you beat a fortress because of luck. This gets my vote as the hardest Mario game. I've read how there's a World A, B, C, and D (if not more), but you need to clear the other eight worlds multiple times to access those?
"Super Mario World" (SNES): I had the strategy guide, so was that cheating? It took me a while to eventually clear all 96 gates (which may not have happened without the guide). There's one that I think I saved until last, where you have to get a key through a hole that's only the size of small Mario/Luigi. Oh, by the way, this room is on the ceiling! Basically, you needed the cape, but you had to fly while being crouched down (which doesn't sound physically possible). I remember the final boss fight being a little disappointing.
"Super Mario 64" (Nintendo 64): This was the game where you could pull on Mario's face and distort it from the title screen. It's kind of sadistic when you think about it for a while. On the first playthrough, I only remember caring about having the minimum number of stars to beat the third or fourth Bowser. I have this game's strategy guide, too, but it still took crazy skill to finish all 120 stars. I think, when you're floating on the carpet, it took me a while to collect the right number of coins, because you had to activate a blue switch, and then wall jump up a tall column to get those coins.
"Super Mario Sunshine" (GameCube): Even though I bought a GameCube on launch day, it's hard to tell why I never owned this game (or "Wind Waker," or "Mario Kart Double Dash," ...). Therefore, I don't remember playing it at all, and the future Mario Kart stages that mention Delfino are strange to me.
"Super Mario Galaxy/Gravity" (Wii): I've only played it for a few hours, but not from lack of interest. I can't really judge whether it's hard. What I do remember was how it made me keep craning my neck.
"Super Mario Galaxy 2" (Wii): I wanted the full priced original box art, but they took it out of stores before I could buy it. I do see that it's on the Wii U eShop, though (and physical, with the ugly Selects box).
"New Super Mario Bros. Wii" (Wii, of course): I definitely cleared every level and got the five shiny stars. I can't say that I didn't need any help, either from the hint videos they include or from an IGN guide. World 9-7 probably took me over 100 attempts to clear! There's one section where I think you almost need Fire Mario, but you can't use the fireballs, because they would melt the ice blocks that are your runway. On the second play, it didn't feel as fun, or I gave up early.
"New Super Mario Bros. Wii U" (Wii U): I'll have to play it first!
To me, that looks like six games where I've cleared the final fortress, and three where I've achieved 100% of the collectibles or other objectives. I still want to go for 100% in "Super Mario 3D World." I was just surprised how World 1 doesn't really challenge you or introduce the idea of needing all four characters. Then again, I didn't even collect all three stars from Stage 1-1 (but I did in most of the other places). In two dimensions, now I appreciate how they were kind of forcing you to learn jumping or another tactic, because the enemies would keep walking to the left or you got stuck under a layer of solid bricks/boxes. In flat "3D," it's like you just climb a wall and find a clear path to get closer to the flagpole.
