Today, when I turned on the Wii U, the experience changed. There must be a difference between a normal user and then creating a Nintendo Network ID. It asks me for the password, and then it says I haven't confirmed my e-mail address yet (planning to do that tonight).
Then when you go to the Wara Wara Plaza, my icons changed from really basic ones (Mii Maker, Parental Controls, Web Browser, ...) to icons that seem to represent games for the Wii U itself or downloads from the Virtual Console. Is it me/(Mii?), or do the other Miis in your plaza all wear gray pants? Mine has red pants, but I didn't see a setting to change the color (only picking your favorite color, which changes his shirt). I still think too many people are talking at the same time! The music that was soothing at first almost makes me want to hit mute or find that setting (can you mute it?). I guess maybe you could swap the TV display with the Miis to the GamePad and then turn the volume down.
It felt a little hard to sync a remote somehow. I thought I had pressed the button, and nothing happened. A second press did the trick. All I had to change in the settings was to say that my sensor bar is below the TV.
Now it's kind of cool to be able to interact with the screen and not use the GamePad all the time. Why is that important? The battery was about to die AGAIN! I haven't kept track of the time between charges, but 3 to 5 hours sounds about right. They sell a high capacity battery, but why wouldn't they have installed one in these newer retail systems? I'm nervous about plugging in the charger while the GamePad is still powered up (static electricity?), and then it's weird if you're playing a game that expects you to tilt the Pad up and down with the wire attached.
FINALLY, at around 3:15, I tried to play a game: Nintendo Land. I couldn't find any information at the Nintendo Support site about whether there are new versions, the size of those update files, or what has changed in the newest version. Sure enough, I tried to start the game, and it needed a 14 or 15 minute download. My OCD wanted to start the game at 3:22 PM (today is the 322nd day of the year). I settled for the game starting by itself around 3:30, and then tapping the screen at 3:32.
My first impressions: It's colorful, but kind of a small game world (not everything is "drawn" until you walk up to it). Who is this "Monita"? How did they pick that name? She reminds me of that robot maid from "The Jetsons" somehow. I'm trying to play the game and she keeps interrupting! Touch this box. Jump on the tower. Do you know how to buy prizes with your coins? Have you taken a ride on the train?
Even with my Nintendo Network ID, it didn't look like other Miis were roaming around the park yet.
Since Mario is the Nintendo mascot, I pretty much HAD to play "Mario Chase" first. I'm not sure if I left too soon or if it feels kind of limited. I get the idea of hide and seek. What if you run right in front of the player(s) with the Toad hat(s)? I had to be both players, since it's just me at home right now. I usually found myself in 33 seconds or less. The stages don't look very big, or like there are many places to "hide." Of course, only one was available at the start. I unlocked stage two and played one round there, which may have opened stage three.
The Link attraction is pretty neat. I got almost a "Yoshi's Wooly World" feel to the stages. There are these close-up views of fabric and buttons. The trees look stitched together. Do you remember the sword game from I think "Wii Sports Resort"? That's how the actual game felt to me. There's one mode with those swords where it forces you to keep walking as enemies come into your path. As a swordsman, it feels like there's a little strategy. You can't just hack away and mow everything down. Some waves are like that. Then you start seeing the guys who have shields (which stuns you if you slash at the shield), and the archers with fire arrows that need to be blocked. The archer role feels even harder, because I kept aiming at the creatures from a distance, but then they would move away from the shot. I think it was also strange to have the GamePad charging and the cable attached.
For my third pick, how about the Metroid franchise? That was my favorite costume when the Mii dresses up like Samus. It kept telling me to hold A and look around to aim, but I was doing OK by just pointing and shooting with B. My highest accuracy was 51% in probably the second stage. It looks like it could take a WHILE to get through every stage as both the GamePad and a remote, but maybe that's a good thing? I don't even remember earning every accomplishment (what are they called again?) in the "Wii Sports" games.
Overall, it's probably a good game to get used to the GamePad and review how the Wii Remote was used to point and shoot on the previous system. I'm curious to try the Donkey Kong game next.
I guess, when I checked my e-mail for the Nintendo Network ID, the link probably does expire in 24 hours, so I might need a new one. After that, I'm official?
My plan would be to hold off on Miiverse (I've been spelling it wrong?) and the eShop until Sunday, plus maybe two to four more games in "Nintendo Land." For Sunday, 11/27, I was thinking about "Disney InfINity 2.0," since there's a timeline for when their servers are shutting down. I wanted to download the digital version of the first InfINity and complete that even before getting very far in 2.0. I'm wondering how that works with the figures. I've leveled up about 11 of them in the Wii edition of the first InfINity. I think you could keep their levels in the other versions of the game or in 2.0, but I'd probably want to start all over again (not be overpowered when entering a playset from the beginning).
Better proofread and get this posted.
