Has anyone seen Nintendo hardware in the stores recently? I can't say that I've been to every store, but it's weird how the Toys R Us where I bought my Wii U and two other TRU locations don't have any up on the shelf. I know that the store closest to home had three or four in the case as recently as November. When you go to many of the retail websites, I think they're also saying out of stock. One Best Buy did have a stack of them as of maybe the middle of the month, but I haven't been there in over a week. Isn't it kind of weird that Nintendo wouldn't want to keep selling its systems during the holidays? I could maybe understand that strategy with the Wii U, since it's had about 49 months to only sell 13.x million units (that's worldwide?). People are noticing the same thing with 3DS, as if Switch is going to make that system obsolete. Weren't there new software releases for it, with "Pokemon Sun and Moon," plus the port of "Super Mario Maker"?
I didn't try to secure an NES Classic Edition on launch day (actually, I bought my Wii U the night before launch). On the "Brickseek" web site, it wasn't showing any stock at Walmart or Target. I read something on the Internet where they only sold about 200,000 units?!! We're talking about a console that originally sold about 52,000,000 boxes, right? I'm thinking that was all in the USA or North America, since Japan has an alternative called the Famicom (unless those two systems have their sales numbers combined). If you divide up 200,000 by 50 states, you get 4,000 per state? And then, how many retail stores are located in each state? Just in my town, I know we have Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and Toys R Us. That's not counting if they'd want to send some to Bed, Bath, and Beyond; Kohl's; Amazon; ...
So, with Wii U, one thing I've heard as a "negative" is that the GamePad always turns on with the system. Could that be on purpose? The way my system worked was, I could press the power button on the GamePad itself before it was ever paired with the console, and a message came up saying to turn on the Wii U. Then, as soon as you boot up a new Wii U, I'm pretty sure it asks you to pair the GamePad right away. Since then, yes, they've always turned on together. It makes sense when I use the GamePad power button to activate the system. It's weird when I use the Pro controller or a Wii remote. All I can think is, for people who bought the system by itself, and didn't own any Wii remotes, how else would you get anywhere unless the GamePad always turned on? All I can think is, would there be a way to program the operating system so that, if it knows that at least one other controller is paired to it, that you could power up with that other device and tell the GamePad to stay off or in sleep mode? Then again, just because you have something paired doesn't mean you're always using that controller. Plus, how would it know what to use if you pressed the power button on the console itself?
Having gone through that logic, I'm still not sure if player 1 can use something besides the GamePad in "Super Mario 3D World." The way I played yesterday, I powered up the system with the Pro controller. The GamePad still turned on, but I ignored it. I was able to get a cursor with a blue outline and the number 1 from using the Pro controller. That was how I clicked the icon to start the game. Once the game loaded, I think the Pro controller turned off or lost its pairing. I pressed the A button, or something else, and it flashed until deciding on player 1. I think I even pressed A on the title screen from the Pro controller, but then it wasn't working to select a save file. What's the deal? The 'Pad was still showing everything and I had to touch the save file from there. That apparently made me player 1 on the GamePad. Meanwhile, I still haven't tried the button somewhere in the game's pause menu where you might be able to switch controllers. If it's highlighted at all, I'm assuming it's possible, even for a single player?
Yesterday, I started on my fourth game! Only about nine other games to go, plus if I buy any more (now I'm nervous about missing "Pokken Tournament," or "Star Fox Zero," with the way that Wii U hardware itself is scarce in stores). I'll have to wait to give this game a full review. In this case, it's "NES Remix Pack." I think I see why they call it a pack, since you get to choose the first version or number two from the title screen. Now, in that game, here's what I did to play as both the Pro controller and the Wii remote (only one at a time, though). Before I ever started the game, I went to Home, Controller Settings, and turned off the GamePad display. Then I just started the game with the Pro controller. I'm not sure how much it helps to use the Pro controller instead. With the GamePad, I don't see much use for the second screen (just mirroring what you can watch on the TV?). The thing is how the buttons are angled (same as on SNES, or the NES "dogbone" controller?), so that, if I want Mario to run, it's the B button ("South" position, if the buttons were a compass), and then A is jumping ("East" on a compass). You can also use X instead of B ("North" position). No matter what, it's just hard for me to keep run pressed down and then time my jumps. To get to the sideways Wii remote, I think I just went back to Home, Controller Settings, and something like "Change the order" of the remotes. By the way, why does the Pro controller show up like a remote icon? Even with a sideways Wii remote kind of mimicking an NES controller (but much thinner?), it threw me off within the game (in other words, no help when the buttons are lined up). I might not be that great of a classic gamer!
I'm wondering how Miiverse works within a bunch of these games. I haven't really seen that feature in "Disney InfINity 2.0" (it may not have Miiverse integration), but you can turn it on or off in the three Nintendo games I've played. Mostly, it just seems to display random posts or pictures of people with a score similar to you (I've seen higher and lower, without noticing a pattern). I think I'm up to 83 of the stars, and then about 9,000 of the "currency" (bits?), which keeps unlocking new stamps that I haven't used yet. It's hard to tell what a few of those stamps represent. Is there a way to see how you rank overall with your times, or a secret list of times to beat for each star level? I know not every other Nintendo game tells you that, either. Like, there are "shiny" Gold medals in "Donkey Kong Country Returns" with unlisted time requirements (someone has probably made their own list).
I know that "NES Remix Pack" wasn't a full price game. One thing that it's making me realize is, were those older games always kind of hard to control? I think "Balloon Fight" has been the worst for me. You have the B button, which seems to make you go really fast, but that's not helpful in the spark areas, because it's too easy to lose control and die. I think my favorite "remix" is when Mario is already running by himself (no button to hold!), and you just figure out things like how long to wait before jumping and maybe the height of each jump? Is there something in the controls of that Mario game where not every jump is the same, depending on how long you press the button? Nintendo really goes into detail with their games.
I still think that "Super Mario 3D World" is a little "hard." The boss fights, not so much. I haven't been invincible in any of them, but it feels like they want you to win somehow, or that it's hard to take any damage. I saw how they did the weird thing with "Mount Must Dash," instead of "Mount Mustache." Whenever a stage tells you to go fast, that's when I want to explore everything. I finally found the online instruction sheets for the game, and I think I've been going without using certain controls or attacks. For the "totem pole" snowmen, wouldn't ground pound knock them apart? I probably haven't done a single ground pound yet. You can crouch, but I don't know how it might serve a purpose. It would explain why "crouch" and "go down a pipe" seem to be mapped to the same button, though. The long jump is back?!! To me, that might contribute towards ruining the skill of getting to the top of a flag pole, though. I doubt that I've been using the move where a cat suit can glide/dive by holding Y. They kind of show you that when the characters are running around on the title screen. One stage even lines up coins to give you that idea, but it still doesn't tell you how to you perform that move!!! I think I've done the floating with the Racoon/Tanooki power-up by "accident." The white and gold striped leaf just seems to be there if you get stuck or die too many times and want to breeze past a level. It doesn't collect all the stars and the stamp for you, though. I didn't realize Mario was invincible when he wears it. Also, why is a leaf Tanooki this time, and not racoon? I'm trying to think if that's happened in another game. In "SMB3," I know that both Racoon and Tanooki were in it, but they worked a little differently. Racoon only gave you ears and a tail. Tanooki could become a statue or crush things. Also, I believe Tanooki looked like a small racoon when you got that power-up? With the propeller block, it sounds like you just hold B to ascend. I was probably tapping B or trying to use motion controls.
Is that enough rambling for one day? I guess I had the right idea NOT to wait until Christmas or later for a Wii U from a "brick-and-mortar" retailer? I'm wondering how long the Nintendo online store will keep certain accessories in stock. I'd definitely be interested in the screen protector, the GameCube adapter (only saw it briefly at a Best Buy or two), more character-themed Wii remotes, the blue nunchuck, an extra white nunchuck, ... Doesn't Nintendo WANT to make more money off of me??? I'm planning to buy DK, Diddy, and Ocarina Link amiibo, even though it's hard to think of that many games which use them for "can't-live-without" extra features. The issue has been how some lots of DK seem to get his eyes in a weird position (almost stuck in his brow area), and then Diddy has some fuzzy paint edges on almost every figure I've seen in a store.
