A very quick update. Went back to the vehicle and scoped it to death. The Camshaft Position Sensor signal was not as it should be. I found that the 3 wires carried 5v 0v 12v (cranking). Further checks established that the 12v wasn't coming from a short somewhere in the wiring but directly from the ECU. So back to the drawing board to establish why 12v was present.
