Thanks for that Dave. I was not leading the diagnosis on this problem, but was asked to supplement it. The garage in question although proficient in "mechanics" only has a basic EOBD scanner which is of no use on this vehicle as it is not EOBD compliant. My initial role was to scan for fault codes and see whats going on as far as the engine management system is concerned. They would deal with the mechanics of the problem.
I have 25yrs experience in motor vehicle technology and although I am confident with petrol engines I have only recently taken an interest in diesel engines. I do however have an enquiring mind which led to this initial post. Yes, a properly trained technician probably would have got to the answer quicker, but then again this vehicle had already spent some time with the main dealers and they had a problem with it. With the help of good people like yourself, and my limited knowledge, we got there in the end..... I have learnt something and I have a satisfied customer.
Now the easy bit comes on Saturday, delete the DPF software, remap the vehicle and reset the FAP counters...
