Machine, you may not "think" that's the case, but I know from personal experience. No, of course I don't know exact numbers, that wasn't my point. My point is that many DO get hooked on drugs while IN prison. I know because it happened with my cousin. He started using Meth after he was sent to prison. He was using pot before, but not the real hard stuff. Am I making excuses for him, of course not, but it does happen. And he wasn't a hardened criminal. It was for the pot charges and theft when he was young.
Luckily, he is clean (on his own) and is doing great now, but he knows many, many inmates that also got hooked while IN prison, and have gotten out just to OD on heroine or whatever else they could get their hands on. THAT was my point. And yes, VERY often, if you get hooked on one drug, it leads to more harmful drugs. That is a known fact. As their body gets used to one drug, they need a bigger "high" and they end up with heroine, and the various forms of using it, and meth. Sounds like perfect logic to me.
Prisons are obviously not the ONLY place the addictions come from, but it is ONE of the places they come from. Drugs are certainly NOT in short supply there, they have gotten very good at sneaking it in. And when you have how many inmates that are already hooked, you have a strong demand for it, it's not a real leap to think others will get hooked too.
