Nissan Vanette 2.3 1999 - Flat and smoking - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 1999
Engine Size and Code *: ld23 2.3

Ive a missan vanette with a ld23 engine. it isn't running right. when stationary and i floor it it belows smoke and sound terrible. when driven it goes flat sounds/feels terrible and forces early gear change untill the revs climb again and gear change is needed again and it belows smoke. ive change the fuel filter and checked the fuel line to the pump and also had the injectors tested and i don't know where to go from here.

I have found what the problem is. The throttle body is fully shut because the vacuum is on full. I think the actuator that connects to the vac pump via a vac hose may be at fault. I have orderd 1. has anybody seen this happen before.

If you are reffering to the actuator, it is located on the inside of the chassis leg, passenger side, other side to the solonoids.

I don't need to test the vac pipe!!! it is the why isn't the vac pressre being regulated at the same time as the fuel injection. I am currently narrowing it down to components, and I thought I'd come on ukat, the uk's no 1 technicians site and see If my post starts some interesting chat, and prehaps pick something up on the way. Is that ok?

Perhaps i have miss-understood you post "I think the actuator that connects to the vac pump via a vac hose may be at fault. I have orderd 1" so what have you ordered the pipe or the actuator ?
But it,s the " i think " that is my problem with the post, easy to test both parts with a mity-vac (if you have one? )

Maybe i should take more time writting my posts. I am not to good with writting posts.
I did do a component test on the actuator. I do not know what the results shoul be, as Ive nothing to compare it to. nissan were not much help. Auto data doesn't have any info on vanettes, serenas, or ldvs.
My asumption that the actuator is at fault, is because the reading on the multimeter. It doesn't move when the engine is reved. I get 12 volts with the red straight to the battery, and the black to the component, with the vac hose disconected, and 0.70 volts with the vac hose connected, and this doesn't change with engine speed.

Do you know the reason for the flap in the intake on a diesel ?

If not we explain, this may help with diagnosis, even without specific vehicle system information

The reason for the flap, is to regulate the amount of air allowed into the combustion chamber.
fully open = max air
fully closed = min air

A diesel is fuel regulated, not air regulated like a petrol.

that is what it does, but not the reason why it does it.

as Kev's say diesels are fuel regulated.

Throttle flaps on diesels can be fitted for 3 reasons.

1) to strangle the air intake on stopping the engine, i.e to make it come to stop smoothly, without shaking the vehicle.

2) to create a depression to increase EGR flow. Mainly (but odd eceptions) modern ECU controlled vehicles.

3) to create a depression ( vacuum ) to operate brake servo (only used on old land rovers from memory )

without specific knowledge of this engine I would say only number 1 applies to this vehicle.

This means that the flap should be Fully open at all times, except a short period when ignition is turned off to stop the engine.

Armed with that system under standing you will hopefully be able to form some diagnostic strategy.

So I was right that the flap should not be closed all of the time.
Surely the engine needs Air to be drawn in, or it would not get compression.
On a ford transit 2.5, say for example 1998 year engine, the throttle cable controls the injector pump and at the same time the air flap, by the bar that connects the two. If you take the bar off and stop the air flap opening in sync to the pump the engine runs crap and belows black smoke.

just to make sure we are on the same page, I am on about the butterfly that lets the air in from the air box.

I know that the engine is regulated by diesel but the air flow, i think should not be in one set position all the time blocking the air intake.

Can you open the flap using a mity-vac connected straight to the Actuator, if so vac it to the open position and test drive.But you may have to stall the engine to switch it off or release the vac.

I just disconnet the vac hose to the throttle. This leaves the throttle wide open. The van runs a bit better, but still not good enough. I havn't got a mighty vac. They ain't much, i know, but my overheads this month are 2 high, so next month it is.

The vac hose to the actuator is sucking its heart.
But the throttle body is sucked shut.

So the flap has a spring to hold it open and the vac pulls it shut at ign. off, or it should do. You need to test the solinoid now.
But as Alan Kane has posted before you will always struggle with-out the right test equipment, and too be honest a mity-vac is one of the most basic,s of must have,s. If you aim to continue in the trade you will have to spend BIG, you wasting far too much time with-out correct equipment and training.
I will have another look for info on this, but this is a bit old for my nissan info.

You almost got it right. The flap is held open by a spring. Sucks shut on engine on and opens on ignition off.

Kev. I am 100% certain that this is what happens.
The vac hose set up is as follows. There is a vac pump on the back of the alternator. There are two vac hoses coming from this.
One vac hose goes towards three solenoids, each solenoid has a two electrical pins and two vac connection points. The hose splits into two, and connects to two of the solenoids and one is blanked. One solenoid sends a hose to the throttle body and the other two turn to one and go to the egr valve. All three solenoids have a two wire plug on top.
The second vac hose from the pump goes to the actuator which is mounted to the chassis and has a one wired plug.

With-out the correct info in front of me it is hard to advise. But try running with the vac pipe to the flap plugged, so no vacuum is lost (so the EGR has vac to work) and then the flap will be open.
Is it possible the Vac pipes or electric plugs to the solinoid,s are crossed over ?

the solenoids, wires and hoses are colour coded.
The egr has a blanking gasket.
I'm buying a mighy vac in Feb.

Reading between the lines here, I think the throttle plate in this instance, will most likely serve as to purge the EGR flow.

My thinking is that, if it was intended for a "strangled shut down" then if Martin is correct & it is pulled shut whilst running, then the engine would not even run. Its' function is almost certainly not for the purpose of Vacuum development for Brake Servo operation.

Does the throttle plate have a potentiometer for position feedback?

As an example of one method of operation, a 2.2 Di Frontera will drive the throttle plate almost fully closed at idle & will open it up as greater intake is required. A fault on the Frontera flap system, will generate a relevant DTC. I am not saying that this is the correct MO for the Nissan in discussion.

If the EGR has been blanked off & the intake flap has been forced open & the driveability concern still exists, then I would suspect that the fault lies elsewhere.

What colour is the smoke? Do the revs remain stable when it loses power?

Here is a vac tool that I bought, after someone (who nobody knows

) broke my MityVac! It was about 70 quid + VAT & it works very nicely.

If you can not afford to buy a vacuum pump (mityvac), why not use the one fitted to the vehicle?
Egr blanked, intake valve held open if vehicle does not run correctly then start to look for the real problem.
We are back to basics here.
Is the fuel getting into the diesel pump and is it getting out?

Hi Keith

Without some form of pressure/vac testing tool, it might be a struggle to confirm the vacuum pump itself is functioning correctly.

On the subject of Vac pump functionality, has anyone gathered any test data, that shows how quickly a vacuum pump can develop 20"/hg?

I am sure that we have all seen examples where 20"/hg is developed, but it can take an age to get there. We could take steps to make sure that there are no leaks in any system, but there are often so many & some are hidden away. A "default" test would be useful, so that the pump performance could be quantified.

Any thought?

It is one thing to be able to measure the degree of pressure, on both sides of atmospheric (vacuum & positive pressures), but what I am hinting at is, how can we verify that a pump is capable of moving the specified volume of air, in a given period?

In a similar way that we discuss not just fuel pressure, but flow also, the same rules apply to vacuum pump functionality.

I have seen many pumps that will achieve the magic 20 inches, but the fact that they take 45 seconds to do so, gives rise for a harder look.

I am not sure where you are heading here. You seem to suggest that Martin can utilise the the vacuum pump that is fitted to the vehicle?

Yes that it true to some extent, but all that would be proven/disproven is the vacuum circuit integrity of each vacuum control system in turn. He would still be left wondering if his vacuum development is adequate.

Last time I looked I don't think I noticed a pressure gauge in a Vannete

Lets not get too distracted by the smart arse combat that we enjoy, but remember that Martin is after some sensible direction in his quest to find the fault. To do that, he needs to establish some facts about the system in front of him.

As the EGR is blanked anyway, I think best way foward is to ( as suggested ) forget about the vacuum side for the moment. Wedge the flap fully open and run it prove that the engine / fuel system is otherwise OK.

Report back when you have done that.

Basic system here, why are we messing about with something that a little knowledge can solve, has he answered the question asked by Dave Cheesman (I may have missed it). At the moment I see no need then more than basic diesel knowledge and basic tools, forget gauges and meters etc.

How did we manage with basic system before (I thought I read that old diesel system were very easy to work on).

Basic system details would have been a start, engine coded, diesel pump type and number, egr system (they vary, from none to two solenoid to three solenoid).

Back to the same problem here, lack of system training.

I wasn't giving Smart arse comments but see people always looking at the none important problems first (why make it complicated). In this case why worry about vacuum build up, the use of one of our senses would do.

Pressure drops across sysems on fluids of all types has been around and checked for longer than I can remember and has always been checked and monitored, supply and demand, if the demand is greater than the supply then the supply has a problem (monitor the last item in the system).

I have tried the engine with the flap wedged open. The flap never fully closes. there is a 2mm gap around the flap.
The engine continues to miss fire. When the egr valve is taken of the exhaust manifold, so that I can see inside whilst the engine is revved, I can see flames coming from the engines.
I am going to check the engine/pump timing and also the cam shaft etc for signs of ware coursing bad valve timing.
I have cleaned the fuel system from the the tank right up to the gauze int he fuel line that goes in the injector pump, and the return.
I can see fuel coming from the nuts connecting the fuel lines to the injectors. I have had the injectors tested.
Although I can see the fuel coming from the lines should it bee a certain pressure and can I measure the pressure/quantity. What Am I looking for.
I use auto data, but it doesn't have any info.

No mention of a mis-fire in your first post, have you tested the compressions or do a cylinder leakage test. (tools permitting !)

Sorry I never used the words miss fire, but said sounds terrible and belows smoke.
It sounds fine at idle speed and ok at low revs. When revved up it sounds terrible/ missfires and belows smoke. when it starts to missfire flames come the head.
I have done a compression test. All 4 cylinders reach 500psi with the needle climbing at the same time, with the throttle body wide open.
I am going to do a cylinder leakdown test when I've check the timing is all right and have taken the rocker cover off and get each cylinder at tdc and the valves shut.
No the flap doesn't have a position sensor.

I have checked the timing of the engine.
The marks on the timing belt are no longer visable. The marking on the enine don't go near where they should be.

I have got a new timing belt, timed it all up, but the engine will not rotate full cycle. Engine locked up. I double checked.

The engine was running. I drove it to my garage.

The head is coming off tomorrow.

So you are going backwards now, as it won,t even turn-over since new belt fitted.
Get it on TDC number 1 and pump aligned on number 1 remove rocker cover and check cam position via over-lap.

I will check again tomorrow.
I did it twice today.
Crankshaft position at tdc on number 1 cylinder, crankshaft keyway at 12 0 clock position, Starting at the crankshaft and going anti clockwise make sure all paint marks on belt align with punch marks on sprockets.
If this is wrong then I must be out of my depths

If you make sure it,s on TDC ignoring any mark,s and then check the cam position via over-lap,the timing cannot be wrong.

That’s not very nice Kevin. I know how to time an engine and I had to think what you meant by “overlap” for a second simply because its not a term I have ever used in this context. Rocking is the more common term where I come from.

Martin, he is referring to the valves rocking on number four when number one is at tdc.

If you think about this timing issue Martin, it drove in and now won’t turn over so you must have timed the new belt wrong. It could be the wrong belt or the marks could be wrong or maybe you used the belt marks in the wrong order.
You need to physically check the tdc position rather than just accept that the keyway should be at 12oc. I have no idea what system this is but once you have the cam and crank right then you need to time the pump as per spec. Only after this can you move on with the job.

You have been asked to supply full details including pump make (and number if possible), can not find it in the posts.
REASON,possibly to set start of delivery there is a dial gauge and lever setting to perform.

BUT to sort YOUR engine timing MESS, remove the belt and all pulleys (do not hit the end of the injection pump to remove pulley with shock) a dial gauge would bypass this step.
With belt cam pulley and crank pulley removed, CHECK locations (key or dogs) are not broken and pulleys can not move on shafts. CLEAN all pulley surfaces and find marks, buy a genuine belt or at least a quality belt that is correct for this engine. REFIT.

NOTE not all engines are timed at TDC,this one has the crankshaft keyway at the 12 o'clock postion but this does not always mean the piston is at TDC. Valve overlap (rock) can be check for general postion but do we need number 1 or number 4 cylinder (there is no reason 2 or 3 could not be used, SYSTEM INFORMATION).

With the lack of info you have there I would go for finding the correct timing marks and use the correct belt.

Possibly, but TBH, I disagree. I exercise restraint here all the time. That’s mainly why I post so little these days.

Very often, the full thoughts of a person don’t show through. That’s one of the failings of the internet and as someone else posted here recently,none of us are budding shakesperes. . The answer to the question asked was simply what overlap referred to. I think its easier to answer that and give the man the benefit of the doubt rather than call his professionalism into doubt.

I did use the word "overlap" for a couple of reasons, firstly when i was much younger i built race engine,s and had cams ground to my profiles (duration, lift and overlap. Second i was trying to see if Martin would work out the meaning like you did.
I do worry about Martins knowledge, he has a post here (which you have posted on) on an Iveco which seems to be going nowhere since 16 October.
His post on a Fiat PAS started of that he had removed the rack, when he had removed the column, and he was surprised the motor had continuity across the motor terminals.
And then there is this post, with data like compressions "500 psi and rising", info. NOT supplied when asked for.
Perhaps i am wrong to point out all this, but better than no comments at all, and if Martin does not like it all he needs to do is improve his posts and get on some traing course,s or is he another that can,t be bothered as per training course thread.
I hold you and your view in high respect, but i do see things differently.

I believe that valve overlap is still taught within the first 2 years of tech college training courses (According to the apprentices log book) so I could not accept that this basic information would not be known.
I fully accept that forums are often difficult places for posts to reflect all the thought processes and things do get misunderstood or are interpreted differently by everyone that reads them. It is also easy when you “know” to forget that not everybody does but this was such fundamental knowledge for any technician that I found it surprising. I don’t really want to call anyone’s professionalism into question directly without actually knowing the person but the thread speaks for itself.
I guess that the OP maybe someone much younger than I am and may not have had to set 1000's of tappets over the years and this may just about explain the term not being recognised, although a simple Google search brings up numerous pages that could be used for self learning.

I,m an old git, so maybe thats why i use "overlap".
One question Martin asked was about fuel quantity supplied, well back in the good old days that could be checked by measure-ing the fuel dispensed by turning the engine over by hand 200 times and divided by 100 to get an average per injection.
Perhaps you were also trained this way

, won,t work on modern diesel but would on this i feel, given full data.

I am not sure I made my point clearly and maybe you won’t agree with me anyway (probably not) but it’s worth a shot if only to clarify my thoughts.

Perhaps Martin understands overlap completely and just suffered a blond moment as we all can at times. Perhaps he is a young apprentice. Perhaps he understands the concept but not the term. His asking that simple question could be for any reason. Perhaps I have some experience with competition engine development too and didn’t need to “work out” what you meant either.
I deliberately didn’t mention Martins other posts on the thread, as that is how I choose to deal with them. I just think it’s a good idea to ignore the posts that you feel don’t come up to your standards rather than comment on them. If you don’t want to help, don’t, but I can’t see the point in posting something that will likely cause problems. That is not really what UKAT is all about.

Thats just my 2c for whatever its worth (probably about 2c).
I will tell you something though, if shakespere ever joins up here his posts better be spot on or I am going to set you on him……….

if you drove a car in to your workshop,and done a timing belt, after which it would not turn over and all timing marks were OK, i,m sure you would put it on TDC and check "overlap or rock as a first port of call.
Also having already checked Martins membership details it seems he is his own boss and not an appentice.
Not sure about shakespere as you well know i,m dyslexic and would most likely burn out the spell check.

I thought that I'd sit at the computer for as long as it takes to post a werthy post. I have been getting a bit of stick, so I thought I'd put the effort in
I am 32 years of age. I have attend in my life a basic mechanic's course, and have been messing around with cars ever sinse. I am far from a professional. I rent garage premesis, where i buy, strip and sell cars in bits, to make a living. I do like to have a go at fixing cars, and would like to start getting better. I have been buying tools as I go. I have spent a good coupl of thousand pounds over the last couple of years.
I have common sense, and the will to learn, which I am trying to do.
I joined ukat, as I was told buy a teacher on a snap on scantool course that it is a good site to get help, and learn. I never really thought I was going to get as much stick as I would. I've never been any good with writting letters, texting or writting on computers, I'm the man useing one finger to write a whole letter.
I am getting better with my scantool,but need to get better still. I know that code reading the vehicle is only the start, and component testing is a must, and good data is needed,
I'll address the previous post I've posted and been criticised for.First of all The Iveco Daily 35C11. I don't have the tools to comunicate with the ecu or any helpfull data. I Have had someone out to comunicate with it for me. The owner of the van doesn't want to eccept that the van needs money spent on it, and has now collected it. Then there is My Renault Scenic power steering fault. I did have a blond moment in being suprised to have continuity across the terminals. I am very busy with my normal work and will get back to it soon and try and figure out what is wrong with it. It's a bit of a piss of that I pay autodata all that money and there's no help at all for me with this.
As for the nissan vanette, I have gone over all the basics. fuel filter, lines, and guaze. Engine compression test, leakdown test. I did strugle with the basic timing because other mechanics had made there own marks on the cogs which threw me of. It is all done now, the valve timing any way.
The engine still doesn't run right, its starts ok, idles ok, but when reved runs rubbish and belows white smoke. I don't know how to check the injector pumps, or do the relavent adjustments, I've never done it. So am going to pass the job on.
I do want to learn more about diesels. I need to learn about injector pumps. I haven't taken it off, so I havn't got a make. If autodata is right it is a Bosch Kiki Rotary injector pump.
I do understand the basic operation of the diesel engine, but think I need to go on a course. I've been searching the net for days trying to find self help, but am not having much luck there.
I will make sure in future that I don't post rubbish posts and do all the basic checks first.
The spell check isn't working So give me a break.
If anybody has any suggestions on learning mainly about diesel pumps bearing in mind I work 7 days a week please do share. Please if you are going to critisise don't bother. We don't all wake up one day rocket scientists.
If I am on the wrong website, can someone direct me to the shallow end.

The more you get into fixing the modern vehicle, the more you are going to hear that. Except it and smile.

Lastly,

you are going to struggle sometimes without a good basic tool kit. I do know that we cannot spend money that we have not got, but in the same breath we cannot do the job without the tools!!

I can understand where you are coming from and like me and many others, not blessed with the all the skills and tools that a lot of the guys on UKAT have. However, you have the desire to learn and this site is the best I have seen and since I have joined, I have learnt a great deal. The guys who are trying to help do so because they want to, and although some of the contributors may be a bit long in the tooth, do not take any criticism as a personal attack. Behind that facade, they are very knowledgeable techs and have a wealth of info to impart.

My first post a few years ago was met with criticism, which was very discouraging. However, having learnt from that I recognise that there is a lot to be gained from posting on UKAT.

I am going to go on a course.
Are there any good websites out there.
Which will explain, and show how to adjust,tune,time. If this is the the right termanalogy. Also show the tools required, and explain the lingo.
I am constantly trying to find a source for good data. I have a years subscription to auto data, but it falls short, as many of you will know. The results of test should be known. or the test itself is pointless. It would be impossible to memorize everything.
I have been looking at technical data for diesel engines, especialy tuning, but I don't understand what I am seeing. Looks very mathmatic.

The pursute for knowledge goes on.

Firstly Martin, taking the time to write that post will go a long way to getting you the help you need and allow other members to understand your position. I think that if you have a thirst for more knowledge and understanding it will come naturally and you will learn something from whatever sources you care to use. The best value for money courses at the moment are the Snap On seminars. £40 for an evening with a buffet and a £20 voucher. I personally think you should persevere with the internet a bit more as there is an amazing amount of info if you take the time to look. I only need to put "automotive oscilloscope" in the You Tube search box and several hours later I'm getting tired. Other good places are the Aftermarket site and Autoinform. Even if you don't understand the whole article you will always pickup something to contribute to the learning curve.
My own background is not dissimilar to yours in that when I started my business (after redundancy) I had been working on construction plant for 15 years and had no idea what this thing they said was a Lambda sensor was there for! I have been a member of this forum for many years now and must admit that I have taken more than I have given, but that is because the level of knowledge of others is miles above my own and I have often not felt confident enough to give advice. One thing for sure, and I'm know you already realise this, is that the more effort you put in, along with proper info, the more you will get out.
Lastly, whatever tools and equipment you have, it will never be enough. I have been lucky in that living in a small town all the local garages to a certain extent share resources. You will just have to try and prioritise as to which tools are more important for your business. A Mityvac has been mentioned but I didn't have one for 3 years!

I only ask for vehicle make /model/year and diesel system make / pump number because without this we are peeing against the wind, the pump may look the same as the next vehicle to it but the control actuation may be totally different. Injection pumps will have make and pump numbers on them , they could/ will be hard to read but they are there.
Information on diesel systems will be difficult be obtain because not many suppliers other then the makers of diesel fuel injection equipment have it, or understand it. Autodata is ok for general workshop info but usually limited on diesel info, Bosch ESI would be better for diesel but this only mainly covers Bosch.
Advice on suppliers of diagnostic equipment, there are not many you can trust and usually will only demo it on something that is covered by most serial tools. The best tool is the one between your ears over 80% of my work is done without the aid of serial tools (they tell lies). Try to work on vehicles that you have tools and equipment for and turn away the rest (for the moment).
As you have found out the spending never stops on newer tools for this and that, a good set of diesel low system pressure gauges will cost approx £1200.00. We have built our own over the years and are now building up another set (£400.00 for gauges and bleed valves without adaptors for vehicles).
You may be better off staying away from the older diesel systems, these are a lot more complicated then the newer CR systems (apart from some of the electronic sensors) and concentrate of just CR.
The biggest enemies of diesel fuel injection equipment old and new, is dirt, air and free water (plus ADD F) but I won’t go into that.
Air in older systems will throw up all sorts of surprises , so basic check is good supply and unobstructed return of the diesel fuel.
NEVER trust diagnostic tool sales people most haven’t a clue about real world work and the technical helplines for most are at best, basic.

One thing I would add Martin regarding
'I have been looking at technical data for diesel engines, especialy tuning, but I don't understand what I am seeing. Looks very mathmatic.'

Learn to walk first then when you're confident at that start running

. Chasing what seems as easy money will bite you in the ass if you dont know what you're doing.

Van now fixed, Fuel pump timing was out.
