The problem is that there are quite a few GOOD people running. Granite City isn't that large of town where someone isn't related to someone else. As I get older, I realize that it is a "very small world". You shouldn't chastise someone who would be great for this community because of their last name. And you know what? I've been around long enough in this town to know of plenty officials who didn't have any relatives working for any of the local taxing bodies, nor ask for someone to be hired. The so-called "Nepotism" doesn't only exist in the public sector, but it can be found in the private sector also. So goes the saying, "It's not what you know, but who you know". It applies to all avenues of life.
Not to vote for someone because of their last name is just plain wrong! You have to vote for the best regardless of the last name. Ask those candidates what they will do for you...the everyday private citizen. What do they stand for? What is it they hope to achieve?
I have no problem and actually think the following people would be quite a refreshing change to the school board that we need,
And I don't see what's wrong with Ron Dillard or Eric Foster also.
But I do have concerns with a couple of the young guys. The "uniform" issue of two years ago is not a reason to run for office!
I want someone who knows what our children need and go thru to be educated from K-12. I want someone who wants the same thing for their children. I want someone who knows what balancing a checkbook is like and living from payday to payday to pay the power bill and mortgage. It's just not the "Harshany " issue and the "Uniform" issue. The responsibility of being on a school board (or a representative on any taxing body board) is the same as running a business or household.
The business is giving our children and grandchildren an education. The responsibility is theirs to ensure that they can read and write for their grade level. Couple that with decisions they must make regarding pay raises, insurance issues, etc., is a tough road to take. And, when and if cuts are needed, they need to approach it in the same manner as their own business or household.
Some of the things that have been said on this forum about some of the candidates is just totally out of line. Eric Foster didn't deserve what was said about him. Most of it is untrue. Yes, he is a Bindy's regular. But he is not a drunk. Carolyn Yates or Meghan Daily didn't deserve what was said about them or their family members either. The list goes on and on.
I personally have no issues with the younger candidates or their reasons for running. I just want someone with hair on their chest.
But the fact remains, we really have some good choices here folks and no choice should be taken lightly.
We may want change, but the choices we choose for change have to be sound. And you know what, we have really been given the choice for that change we may want this time around. Don't take it for granted.
