disman00911, the radio ratings use a small device to listen around people what they are exposed to. Back in the day before PPM, the selected people to fill out diaries, had to manually "write" every station or sound they were exposed to. As you an imagine, there was nothing to stop someone from entering their favorites station 24/7.

This is where call signs were important. For instances where there was a WBBM-AM or FM, the suffix was important and so were station slogans. Station call signs have become nothing more than a formality for FCC rules.

Even TV call signs are overall no longer relevant. TV stations are known by slogans. "The U", "METV", ABC 7, etc. The exception is WGN-TV which embraces their call signs.
