Flipped. "The music you've always loved and the best of what's new"

In other words, Rhythmic AC or Rhythmic Hot AC. Mostly 90s-2010s music pulled from 104.3's playlist with a few new songs mixed in.

Everything else but the logo and the voiceover is the same.

No surprise. Better be air checking Jams. They will be SCORE-FM sooner than later.

As I said when everyone was saying this would not happen...... matter of time. I was correct. This was 199% obvious when Jeremy noted that B96 was spiking JAMS gold titles. It was further cemented when Todd was shown the door and Erik was "ITERIM" PD. You do not do that if you have loyalty to the format, or to Erik.

They will fare better aiming to an older demo.

I have been listening for an hour now. Observations:

#1 - For the Classic Dance (B96, Killer Bee, Party Radio generation listeners) you are out of luck. This is Classic Hip Hop 1990 forward with some of today's CHR.

#2 - This is an Urban based format, that will attract listeners that are White or Non White. No discussion past this. No rock, no dance, most artists are non Anglo.

#3 - Totally a female oriented format. Female voice/production. Gabe the announcer, said this, which screams female lifestyle. "What is the #1 Grocery store chain in Chicago? Answer right after this!" (The answer was "Jewels")

#4 - Gabe is def Voice Tracked. We shall see about other shifts, but do not bet your life on it being otherwise.

#5 - 96 min commercial free sweeps. It just shows how broke Audacy is. They can't even go commercial free for the first day, weekend, etc..... The stopsets are brutal.

#6 - I believe they will hope to retain the 104.3 audience and add in some younger numbers that will stick around or share with KISS. If they can do this, as crappy as this is, it will be leaps and bounds better than what B96 has been in years.

#7 - Who is their main competition? Lord if I knew, I would be a billionaire. V103? GCI? Little bit of the MIX?

I've noticed it reading their playlist on OnlineRadioBox. They really cranked up the older titles. What would the average ratio between gold/recurrent titles and gold music be in the long run?

I mentioned this in one of the older threads but how are they going to mesh together Lady Gaga/Taylor Swift/Miley Cyrus/Justin Beiber with 2pac/Notorious BIG/Lil Jon/Eminem/Nelly without sounding like a train wreck? Sounds like a mesh between 104.3 Jams and 100.3 WSHE.

Not shocked at all that the dance music B96 was known for playing during the 1990s (the key ingredient to their success back then BTW) continues to get ignored. The higher-ups at Audacy would make you think that people who grew up in the Chicago area in the 1990s or 2000s listening to B96 back then (like me) never heard of house, Eurodance or freestyle music.

They're obviously going to flip 104.3. 104.3 is performing better but B96 is the heritage brand. Best way to handle this is hope those listeners shift over to 96.3 instead of 102.7, 107.5 or 100.3.

This is a much more Pop-friendly version of 104.3 with some currents. They would not play Spice Girls, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, etc on 104.3.

If all fails, all they have to do is change the music back. They really didn't do anything drastic with anything else aside from changing the logo back.

Since B96 is shifting their brand, they should change that awful logo. Also, I can't see why B96 wouldn't bring the 104.3 Jams mixers to the station and put mixes back on B96 should 104.3 flip to simulcasting 670 the Score.

I'll never understand corporate heads. Best ratings, heritage sound, what made them famous, was the dance music. In the late 90s/2000s when they went more hip-hop, the ratings slide went downhill til now. So bring back the hip-hop that began the crash in the first place??????? SMH! It seemed like they were heading into a slightly more Mainstream CHR direction in the late 90s before 92.7 came around at the end of 1998. B96 went pretty much all in on the Hip-Hop in 1999.

I have a tape around here somewhere of New Years Eve 1998, late December. B96 had plenty of Pop and Rock mixed in at the time I was recording. 92.7 KISS FM was only about a month old at that point.

103.5 in the early days used to frequently, and I mean frequently take shots at them for not playing all of the hits. Started subtle: "Listen to B, and you'll miss this"

Then it went into calling it "B9Sux", prank calling them, going around Dunkin Donuts ripping down Eddie & Jobo posters live on the air, and eventually having some staff walk right over to their studio (Which laughably, they let them in)

B96 was generally getting better ratings. They had Eddie & Jobo, and the mixshows. The rest of it took the back seat.

Then in 2006 103.5 gave up and BECAME B96. That continued until 2013. It was terrible.

At this rate, fewer people under 40 are listening to the radio. So B96 might as well try to target the 35-44s. The ones who were teenagers in the late 90s and 2000s. It makes sense.

Thing is with the Dance, if you were say 18, 19 or 20 in the early-mid 90s when B96 was pumping out the Dance, you're probably in your Mid-Late 40s, upper end of that demo (People who were in college in the early-mid 90s) are probably in their early 50s or close to it.

Radio still wants the 25-54s. They probably want the younger end of that (With the fact fewer people under 40 still listen), So that would be the 35-44s. The people who were 18, 19 or 20 in say around 2000-2002. Mid-late 30s, Early 40s. This is clearly a 35-44 Hispanic Female format.

Jeremy correct, but the younger end earns a LOT less than the older end.

Also, sure, let's go crawl up a format where 9 other stations are aiming the same demo. Why not actually go with the format that no one else is playing on the radio and you own your niche? LOL, I know, makes too much sense.

But that is why we are all discussing how the medium is dying.

I guess their problem is the ad agencies. If the ad agencies would figure this out, we would have a lot more formats with older, and in my personal opinion better music.

I'm particularly fond of 60s Oldies. It's not on in Chicago. Milwaukee has it. For a different reason. It works as a flanker like 100.3 does. They're not too worried about billing really well. Just trying to chop down the ratings of another station so another in the cluster can have higher ratings. It's working. Look at WKLH's numbers that were released today.

The Oldies format gets really good ratings too on a terrible signal. Doing exactly what they want. Propping up another in the cluster and having an audience of it's own.

In Chicago, it's not happening. MeTV-FM is the closest we have, but it's more into the 70s and 80s now.

I was looking through WSHE 100.3's playlist on their website. Although the slogan is "She Loves the 90s and 2000s", there were a few 80s songs and even a hint of 70s disco but I'm assuming that B96 won't touch any pre-1990s music in their new direction.

I'm guessing B96's new slogan should had been "Today's Hits and Yesterday's Hip Hop" as I still find it hard to believe that B96 (and 104.3 Jams for that matter since they are supposedly classic rhythmic and not classic urban) won't touch THESE notable 90s/early 2k rhythmic-friendly songs:

I heard Spice Girls - Wannabe on B96 at some point earlier last week or the week before. They slowly started playing these songs but the flip happened at Midnight on Friday.

WSHE is 80s-2010s with the core being 90s and 2000s. This is pretty typical for stations that refer to themselves as "90s and 2000s" They will play some 2010s and 80s in the mix.

WSHE has a problem with remakes of certain songs. They have some really weird remake of A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton. It doesn't sound authentic when they play these versions. It would be an easy fix to change the song.

On weekends, they take the playlist a tad bit more wide and to an extent more uptempo. They call them "Throwback Weekends" which is what the current format came from. It was still an AC station when they started doing this.

I'm pretty sure they plan to waste the 104.3 frequency and simulcast 670. Like 670 really needs FM being by far the strongest AM signal in Chicago. They don't really care about reach though. They call KYW "Newsradio 103.9" and the 103.9 frequency only has 270 Watts, about a translator or Class A range compared to the AM's 50kw footprint. At some point, I think they just want to turn off all of their AMs and sell the land. They already sold the WBBM land a few years ago.

I should also point out, they changed the processing on B96. It sounds very much like 104.3's processing.

Research (and this time it is spot on) shows that people hate Hip Hop and Freestyle/House/Euro/Pop Dance being intermixed. B96 now and Jams in the past, are smart avoiding it. In the 90s when B9 spun both, ratings would decrease. They would shift dance again, the reading went up. When they dropped dance and were Hip Hop in the late 90s and early 2K, their ratings increased.

The end goal is to get out of the tower, land and AM license holding business. When FM keeps declining, all the major players want to just cast off of IP (internet).

Within 2 years, you will see 670 and 780 be sold. Most likely to Conservative entities or religious or ethic. They are not valued like they were 15 years ago, but they will bring in cash liquid to a company that does not have any right now.

Never. Not being mean, but that is stuff for radio geeks like us. Audacy is trading at 13 CENTS a share. They can barely keep the lights on. No one cares about call letters since PPM arrived and these people at Audacy are working several jobs to survive. (Anyone catch Gabe on The Score and WBBM News among other Audacy outlets across the nation?)

I still think radio station companies should be consistent with call letters while avoiding confusion. Are there any other radio stations in other markets with a similar situation to 105.9 and 780?

Their sister station in San Francisco, 740 KCBS has been simulcasting on 106.9 KFRC for 15 years. They never changed the calls of the FM. The calls mean nothing.

CBS swapped KFRC-AM with Family Radio for the 106.9 frequency so they could launch the failed "Free FM" format they ran in every market. When Free FM failed, they brought the Classic Hits format that was running on 99.7 KFRC-FM (Now KMVQ) back, but only for a year before flipping it to the KCBS simulcast.

The KFRC Classic Hits format was actually running on 106.9 HD2 consistently since until they shut off most of their HD2 channels earlier this year.

In response to my above post, San Francisco is still one of the few markets where they still make mention of the AM signal. FM coverage in that market by default is terrible. Most every station has multiple boosters.

Several FM music stations (99.7 KFRC, 96.5 KOIT, etc) had AM sister stations simulcasting the music format for the same reason (Bad FM coverage) well into the 2000s. KFRC-FM (99.7) simulcast with the legacy KFRC-AM (610) until the swap with Family Radio. I believe 96.5 KOIT was simulcast on 1260 until the Mid-Late 2000s.

disman00911, not sure if you realize, call sings became irrelevant when PPM was established. PPM does not rely on call signs and manual diary entires are a thing of the past. How about stations being carried on more than one translator and an AM signal? Your opinion falls apart there.

I can assure you 99.9% of people listening to Newsradio 105.9 have *zero* clue it is WCFS-FM. Nor do they care. Call signs are simply there for FCC compliance.

disman00911, the radio ratings use a small device to listen around people what they are exposed to. Back in the day before PPM, the selected people to fill out diaries, had to manually "write" every station or sound they were exposed to. As you an imagine, there was nothing to stop someone from entering their favorites station 24/7.

This is where call signs were important. For instances where there was a WBBM-AM or FM, the suffix was important and so were station slogans. Station call signs have become nothing more than a formality for FCC rules.

Even TV call signs are overall no longer relevant. TV stations are known by slogans. "The U", "METV", ABC 7, etc. The exception is WGN-TV which embraces their call signs.

I am not a pro disman00911! Still learning every day. I was where you were at one time. Long time learning how it all works! Same thing for Jeremy and everyone here like you that are learning! Have a nice Saturday. :-)

So, WHAT is the format. If it's NOT CHR, what is it? If it's Rhythmic, or Rhytmic HotAC. Isn't that how 100.3 was and dropped that, some time ago. (They've had SO MANY calls) I don't know what-when this was.

We are witnessing the downward fall of FM terrestrial radio. Not sure many realize it.

John, if the major companies could have their way, they would be shutting off every transmitter and going IP based. That is the evolution to kill AM and FM.

People just don't get it. If yea re invaded, the first thing is they will shut off our IP based services. Hell, our own govt can do it! With no AM/FM, how do you communicate the enemy is marching down the streets of your towns?

I remember, tho cannot prove, I saw "Tomorrow" with Tom Snyder. "Murray the K" said "AM will be dead by 1975. It'll be like the Marine Band." This MIGHT have been 1972 ish. Duke Wright was told of "death of radio" in 1963, I believe.

I wonder about TV as TV viewership has been usurped by AM-FM!

The SW band is a graveyard except for a few religious, Cuban and Ham operators. In the past few years, weird loud pulsating noises have been heard and it is attributed to a "experimental" license allowing stock trading information to be blasted. (Not sure how the unstable SW band can help with this but it is causing massive interference).

1st we saw AM daytimers being turned in. Now you are seeing Audacy turning off medium market AM signals (Vegas). Which translator or LPFM does any of the big companies own in Chicago? None. All are Religious or small rich owners or investors.

Writing is on the wall.

What else can be said of B96? It is nearly all voice tracked. The audio levels are a joke when the tracks are playing. The voice gal is produced like crap and sounds horrid. Hey, what do I know? 🤷🏻‍♂️

If Audacy really wants the station to be successful, they need to bring back the weekend mixes. Not playing all of the mainstream crap, play some Chicago House classics as well as some new hits. The station could come back to its glory days if that were to happen.
