I am all for education in any district.
There are two criteria that I wish would be considered ---
1. There is the tired question of whether or not our tax dollars are being spent in the most efficient way possible. That answer will always be no...and we can't leave our kids hanging, wherever those kids may be.
2. I really think this is the issue no one talks about....is the approach to education. Perhaps educators talk about it -- and sometimes common core makes the news -- or the frustration of teachers having to teach for tests instead of actually teaching.
The USA is no longer number 1 in education -- it simply isn't.
What are schools doing in other places that make them more successful? What drives our kids to the breaking point?
But the problem is -- point 2 never comes up but in internal conversations among those in the education community.
What if education is economical because there are fewer hours of school? What if we treated older high school students like adults - and not mandated that they stay there for seven hours --- especially seniors who really don't need the credits?
What if students were engaged to clean up after themselves a little more --- instilling both manners and a sense of responsibility for their shared community?
I realize I am going off on areas not relevant to the conversation -- however -- when do they ever get brought up?
I realize the tax question is usually about a need that exists in the here and now - and we weigh the benefits and the costs in saying yes or no --- but when do we ever get to have the conversation?
Many much more successful education models costs a great deal less than does ours per student...and yet we keep throwing more and more money into it.
Money in education is great in my mind -but I want the money spent effectively, not just economically.
