To me, the best thing to do (fantasy world) would be to reject this tax and reject every sitting member of Illinois government.
The reality is though, it's not gonna happen in the foreseeable future. Illinois is a failed state and we local yokels got to do what we can.
If I am reading this correctly, a $100 purchase (already adding about $7 in taxes) would add an additional $1 (making your total purchase after tax $108).
MAYBE our super high property taxes go down (one thing that doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy) a bit.
IN REALITY the Illinois government is going to continue to fail. We got to do something...
I don't trust Illinois voters to change their government and it seems that this is an "easy way" to acquire funding for this...
I don't like it...but we residents of the Democratic People's Republic of Illinois at Madiganistan are between a rock and a hard place.
Those folks that go across the river for gas/cigs, etc will continue to do so, but this will add revenue from folks driving through picking up McDonalds (costing you too, which may drive you to not eat McDonalds, which may be a subtle win....).
It would be very easy to say (since my kids have only a few years left of public school) "I got mine...eff y'all".
I initially was opposed to this tax, as if you look..IL residents are taxed to death.
BUT, the reality is, is that (unfortunately, since IL residents are sadomasochists and enjoy sending folks who win a shallow popularity contest instead of good solid folks to Springfield...or even worse, the corruption is so bad (cough, IL dems, cough, madigan cough) there are no other choices) our state government won't change...and our schools aren't going to get money they need to maintain facilities.
So what do you do?
Well, this seems the best option at this point. And if we ever come to our damned senses and elect the right folks...this tax would be offset by proper state tax and pension reform.
I am holding my nose and shaking my fist at IL residents to stop punching themselves in the private parts, but I will vote yes for this.
