    MARYVILLE SCHOOL INCIDENT Archived Message

This school and it's policies sounds like a mess! Who punishes a 6 year old with detention in the first place? My bet is that a 6 year old wouldn't even know what detention is. How can you hold a 6 year old responsible for missing his lunch time, instead of the adults in charge being held accountable for not making sure they knew where this child was to make sure he made it to lunch with his class?

From the mother of this 6 year old.

Is anyone familiar with how Maryville started doing their recess/lunch for 1st graders? My 6 year old got off the bus crying saying he didn't get to eat lunch bc he didn't know it was time for lunch since they have recess before. My 1st grader was left on the playground during his lunch time with the second graders. He told me they started a new thing & there is no bell or whistle & they hold up a sign & don't say anything. Where before they would call out when it was time to come in & he never had a issue before. It's just extremely disturbing to me that they would not make sure all the 1st graders are in the lunch room & not on the playground with the second graders? MY CHILD WENT WITHOUT LUNCH & CAME HOME HUNGRY. && on top of all that he got in trouble (on "yellow") for it. He's a well behaved kid & made a mistake by not seeing a "sign" bc he's 6 years old. Sorry for venting. This just broke my heart. I could see kids older getting in trouble for this, but a 6 year old?? Anyone else have this problem?

From the father of the little boy.

So ****** comes home from school yesterday. He was upset and crying because he was hungry. He told us that he didn't get to eat lunch. He said he was at recess and they held up the sign for his section to go eat, but he never saw it becaudse he was playing on the playground. After he tells his teacher that he didn't eat, she moved him from green to yellow on his behavior chart, then sent him to the prinicpal. The prinicipal apparently thought that detention was the proper course of discipline for not getting to eat lunch. So my sweet innocent ******* will be serving Detention for being a bad kid at school. How about they be punished for not knowing where my son was at? ****** called this morning and talked to the principal. When she told him how upset he was because he was hungry, this dumb ****** (pardon my French but I am freaking mad right now) says he was only upset because he got caught and has detention now. So needless to say I am taking leave today and going up to the school to have a little chit chat. I don't want my son sitting in detention thinking he is a bad kid. Giving a young kid who just turned 6 a month ago the impression they are bad, is so messed up. Wish me luck.

I got a personal call from the superintendent. The first thing he brought up was this post, and saying this is uncalled for. I think this is awesome. They want all this swept under the rug! I'm sorry but if you can hold a 6 year old accountable and punish him for what I feel is negligence by the school, then you can punish the principal for their failed policies and practices regarding our children.

This isn't assault on the awesome teachers and faculty that Granite City has. It's an attack on a administrator who thinks it's okay to denigrate my son and punish him for his failure to keep track of his students and ensure they are fed.

Well I am out of there now. The cops were awesome. The principal tried getting them to charges me with trespassing and disorderly conduct. I never lost my cool, just told the pricipal that I didn't think he should have a job if he can not keep track of his students, and then discipline them for their ineptitude. I am really upset right now and not sure what I should do next. The police told me that I am no longer allowed on any school property or I will be charged, and that if I want to meet with school board, I have to make an appointment, or I may be arrested for trespassing. I got to the school and asked to speak with Principal Lull. I sat down and asked him why my son has detention. He said that because they have been having trouble with kids missing their lunch and that now they are giving detention if you miss. i told him how ridiculous it is that he cant keep track of their students, and that he gets paid way to much to do such a terrible job. He then told me i had to leave the school. I told him I am not leaving without my kids, so I went down toget him and b the time we were out of the building, the cops cme flying up with sirens. They then went down and pulled ***** out of his class. They are terrified and were crying thinking I was going to jail. That is scarring to them and unacceptable. Any ideas on what I can do? I want this guy's job. He literally laughed at me when I said he isnt going to detention. He chuckled and said that eventually he will be in detention.

They should not be allowed to ban you off school property simply because they don't like what you have to say, as long as you did not threaten anyone or disrupt the school.
