    When you graduated High School, it was entirely possible to find an unskilled job that paid well enough that you could marry your HS sweetheart right out of HS and start having a family. This is no longer the case. There are very few lines of work that come with a livable wage right out of High School. To eventually make a median income, even in the Trades, (where people used to be taught on the job through apprenticeships) College is almost mandatory, if you ever want median or better income. Even then most families have two parents working, because one income is not enough. People leaving HS these days have much less opportunity, to get more opportunity they must go to college where they could incur more debt than they have been taught understand.

    When you graduated HS, you had nothing. For someone today, to have the same opportunity you did leaving HS, they must go to college, and probably accrue quite a bit of debt. So they are starting life about 2-6 years latter than you did, and in most cases in debt aka less than nothing.
