Bill, You may well be correct, as John's book shows a "transition" gun with the engraving as described. The serial number puts this gun in the fourth year of production (1894), so that's within the "rosette" engraving period. However, I stand by my statement that the rib is post manufacture, as the VR was not offered until 1917. Pictures would help to solve the mystery.
