Constitutional monarchy relies on a person as its symbol of unity. But there are other strong symbols that can provide such unity - the flag, for instance. The concept of patriotism is the strongest inducement to political unity. In a republic, the head of state can temporarily embody the nation's patriotism, but no one holds such a position for life. Therefore, the nation itself is the source of unity. This is O/T of course, but it needs to be said that those of us who live in republics also experience very strong patriotism. Edit: There is also a strong religious aspect to such patriotism. Most of our national hymns speak of our country as God given.
