In 1937 George VI removed St Edward’s Crown before the Communion and put on the Imperial State Crown after it, to return with Queen Elizabeth to their Throne-Chairs.
In 1953 Elizabeth II put St Edward’s Crown back on after the Communion, wearing it on the Throne-Chair again and to St Edward’s Chapel for the Recess
where she removed that Crown and it was placed on the altar there.
This accords with the observation of westendwilly here.
Concerning the Queen at her 1953 coronation, Barker states -
“ After the Communion she had moved across the Theatre again wearing the crown and carrying two Sceptres. She was the only sovereign in modern times
who had sustained the heavy Crown of St Edward from the crowning to the end of the ceremony except during the Communion - even her father had
exchanged that heavy burden for the much lighter Imperial State Crown at this point of the Service. “
