The union leaders are just like everyone else, they are going to try to get away with whatever they can. Keep in mind that it is the higher-ups and not the members in most of these situations who try to push the issue. It's the American way I guess, and I don't see that way of doing business changing any time soon. I'm glad you held firm and did not allow the union or anyone else to try to take over. I'm sure from their perspective they feel justified, for one I do not feel the same way.
