Dee, all of public education is tax dollar supported. The science classes you speak about, the lunch program. It's how we prepare kids for life. I know sports is a drain on the tax dollar but it also provides a potential revenue stream for kids who couldn't otherwise afford college. Factor in too that there are indeed (or used to be) contests for science and building trade projects. The local building trade kids use the homes they build to display their talents. I understand your points but I see extra curricular programs, sports, band, dancing, etc... as part of the program. If you kill sports, or ask that they are strictly funded by participants, do the same for the band, the dance team, the cheerleaders, etc... because they are all dependent on tax dollars.
