The same thing that happened to GC Wrestling. Other communities caught up and passed our youth program quality.
In the early days of soccer, Granite City and Collinsville both had excellent club programs. No one else around at that time had such programs let alone quality ones.
Now, Edwardsville, O'Fallon, Belleville all have great YMCA and club programs. Their kids now grow up in the system. Same goes with wrestling.
It's not that we have bad coaches ore even that our kids aren't talented. They kids are merely victims of a community that no longer has good feeder programs. (correction, no longer has the quality they did in the 70's and 89's)
I've heard people say, "if we had a turf soccer field we could compete". Really? Gene Baker won numerous titles on the old baseball field. I don't know how many people attend soccer games now but it is clearly not the sport it was back in the hey day.
Let the kids enjoy their high school sport for what it is, an extra curricular activity that teaches them about sportsmanship and the possibility to gain a scholarship.
Does the soccer team have another new coach this season? Didn't they just have a new one a year or two ago?
