Mike, I will try to answer some of your questions here. When it comes to sick days, its a smart idea for employers to allow for sick leave accrual, it just makes sense. The US Postal Service, whom I retired from, allows employees to bank their leave time, both sick and annual. The last time I checked, the city Wastewater Dept. allows employees to accrue sick leave, too, to a maximum of 90 days, the last I heard. Postal employees can accrue sick leave forever, at the max of 104 clock hours every year. There is added incentive, any employee with 2000 or more hours of sick leave can use that unused sick leave as credit for retirement. Bargaining unit employees can also bank annual leave up to 440 clock hours. Yes, these are both government entities, and I would suggest that private businesses do this, too. Again, it just makes sense. Really, would you like to be left twisting in the wind without all that sick leave to cover you if you suddenly break a leg (10 weeks on sick leave), have to use sick leave to take care of a family member (this is covered under the Federal Medical Leave Act), or God forbid, have a heart attack or something else that throws you on your back? I've had all these happen to me, and Thank God for that leave. These teachers go through a lot each day and night on behalf of these kids-you don't think they don't get stressed out? Think again. Another post follows.
