I know a family that the bread winner worked 25 years at his place of employment and he had a total of 3 sick/personal days for the entire year. After 25 years of service he became very sick and missed around 3 months of work. Not only did his pay check stop, but when he finally returned to work, he had to repay all the insurance premiums that had not been withheld from his paycheck, that he was to sick to earn. That's not a good situation but on the other hand, it was his choice knowing the benefits of his employer to hang for so long. Shame on the company for not taking better care of a loyal employee. I believe stories just like this one are far more common than you realize. Not everyone has such a sweet arrangement from their employer. I don't think it is unreasonable to believe that a salaried employee's salary is not docked for a day off the same as an hourly paid employee. If they have available days they aren't docked. However, if I had someone who used all ten days every year, it's very doubtful they would have survived long enough in my business to get a cash out when they left. If a "salary" person developed cancer and missed fifty days and had those accrued days, they would be taken care of. If they abused sick leave then they would suffer the consequences. I worked on salary for many years and my pay was the same if I worked 40 hours or 20 although I was expected to work a full 40. I imagine if I would have abused the salary pay, they would have either terminated me or changed my pay over to hourly. This eliminated the need for sick days. That works for a good employee as you apparently were but what about the abuser. Let's say you use two days a year sick leave. Your co worker uses al ten not only this year but every year. Are you not worthy of a bonus for not screwing the company? In my company you would have been.
