Those of you who believe that teachers are nothing more than overpaid, underworked, babysitters;how many of you would be willing to take a teachers place for one week and have to do their job? I believe that most teachers are competent and able to teach. I have never said that teachers were the problem. I have always maintained that the 3 problems inherent with the current environment are in no particular order 1) politicians 2) school administrations 3) parents. My willingness to take on their jobs has nothing to do with this discussion. I think the "if you don't like something do something about it" argument is nonsense at best. Those of you who would arbitrairly cut a persons salary, how about your owm salary. How would you feel if the company you work for came in and told you sorry but you are only worth minimum wage so we are cutting your pay because we just dont have the business anymore to pay you a decent salary. I have also mentioned this several times in the past. When talking about public sector jobs and private sector jobs you are talking about apples and oranges. Public sector jobs are intrinsically tied to taxpayer money. If the tax base has shrunk either by loss of population of loss of income how can you expect to pay public sector jobs the same or more? That is what I don't understand about Democrats in particular. How did they come to the notion that job loss/reduction in hours and tax hikes (example: Obamacare) increase the economic well being of people? You who are so quick to blame teachers for the state of public education seem to forget who runs public education. You remember, those "genuises" holding office in Springfield? I agree with this statement, but then again I have not been one to blame teachers. Teachers for the most part should not have to teach under a statist umbrella. Programs like standardized testing and core curriculum do nothing to teach students anything other than how to pass a test. But let us not remove any blame from the local school districts. For years they have spent every dime allocated to them, and often not wisely. Locally, the frivolous renovations to the front of the gym and gym annex come to mind. The ones who never taught a day in their lives but feel they can run a public education system? So what?
