While I agree that it is way over diagnosed, there are kids that really do have the disorder and need medication. My daughter was always hyper and didn't think before acting. She struggled through school. Finally when she was in fourth grade I had her tested. She was sent to a neurologist. They did some written tests, observation and had her teachers and me fill out questioners. She was put on medication, Strattera. The difference was marked and immediate. She could concentrate in school, her behavior improved. She went from making all d's and f's to all a's and b's in a matter of weeks. We had tried everything before. Punishments, consequences, spankings, diet. Nothing worked except medication. I was reluctant to put her on anything, tried everything else first and was glad I gave in. it has made a huge difference in my daughters life.
