"I kindly invite you to look at the top 10 countries that apply the death penalty. Yes, this is the company that we are in." This doesn't bother me a bit. As I said, I am in favor of the death penalty, I am not concerned with what other countries are doing. "the death penalty needs to be abolished, because the costs involved have proven much higher than housing every death row inmate for life." This may be true, given that we give the accused or convicted more rights than their victims. What should stop is allowing the convicted eighty-two chances to weasel their way out of punishment they have earned and doing so on the taxpayers dime. We have allowed unscrupulous lawyers to charge exceedingly high rates to the defense funds. I have no problem with an eye for an eye. Then what you are saying is that you have no problem with the cycle of violence continuing infinitely. The cycle of violence cannot be stopped if we do not have just a little 'mercy' in our means of applying justice. I have no problem, the cycle is this: Person commits crime, is found without doubt to be guilty of said crime, person is executed. Cycle ends. Additionally, MAYBE next potential criminal will consider that outcome before committing a crime. Of course, MAYBE NOT, then a new cycle begins and ends, at least criminal #1 will never get out again to ruin someone else's life. The cycle of violence cannot be stopped unless there is a little more 'mercy' in selecting crimes and victims upon which to prey. Now regardless of how the death penalty would be applied, I would still be against it no matter what. As is your right in this country, as you said, we agree to disagree. THERE IS NOTHING FAIR ABOUT THE DEATH PENALTY as it stands today. The ones who would 'deserve to die' are not always punished. The ones who end up dying are the ones who could not afford competent legal counsel. Yes, the death penalty is skewed against the poor and against the non-white. You'll have to show me where in the statutes it states that whites or those who may be wealthy get a free pass, a better deal, or easier time. I don't buy that line anytime I hear it. If more people of certain colour or financial status are prosecuted, it is because more of that demographic are committing crimes. That is though no fault but their own. Moreover, this lack of competent legal counsel has sent many a good innocent person to the chair, the needle, the chamber, to the gallows or to the range. If incompetent legal counsel is all that sends people to their deaths for a crime, perhaps the education system is to blame, or maybe we should blame the HR department that hired those with less than acceptable intelligence to be lawyers. Perhaps the treasury is to blame for not wishing to pay good lawyers to work in the criminal defense arena. I for one do not want some overzealous prosecutor killing someone just because he wants to have the perpetrator executed and he wants that person on the stand to be the man or woman who did it. Some of these persecutors..ahem State's Attorneys..want to prove their prowess, and sending someone to death row helps bolster their record among some. No, it shouldn't be the prosecutors job to decide, that should be written in the books as a law, you murder, you recieve the same. Seems simple to me. I don't want the one on the stand to be guilty, I want the one that is guilty on the the stand. There is a huge difference. Now if someone is convicting the innocent, that person need to be removed from their position. I'll grant you this, that situation is far from justice. and over 20 people alone have been exonerated in Illinois alone. That means the states are killing innocent people! That's right - we have blood on our hands. Negative, I have no blood on my hands, you cannot convince me otherwise. It isn't my job to prosecute, pull the trigger, push the button, or any of that. I know you'll think I do because I favor the process. But as I've said, I favor the process when there is guilt without doubt. It must be done correctly to be fair. But yet, some people want this process expanded!?! Where is the justice? You may ask where the justice is, but I am sure for every one like you that asks, there are many more victims or their families who ask the same question. So now - thank God this wrongful and racist practice that is skewed against the poor is close to being illegal. Like I said, I will be glad when true justice is served. To call it wrong is, as I've said, an opinion you're welcome to have. But to call it racist or skewed against the poor is foolish. You may as well say, "it's ok to commit heinous crimes if you are wealthy or white" I've heard all these arguments before. It's their fault cause they're not white, they're not wealthy, they're guilty because they had a bad lawyer, a bad childhood, or that other guy had cooler shoes than me. Whatever the excuse is. Why do I never hear, "They're guilty because they did it."? It's always someone else's fault so we shouldn't have a death penalty. I believe the real problem most people have isn't the outcome of a death penalty. The problem is the fear of executing an innocent. That is a very good fear to have and one to be respected. Granted, one innocent life snuffed out is too many. So, get it right, remove all doubt. Be absolutely certain a person has done what they're accused of. It's not the outcome I have a problems with, it's the process. Everyone wants to fix the condition, but not the problem. Make the lawyers perform well, make sure there is not a shread of doubt. Remove technicalities and loopholes that the guilty knowingly use. Make the system fair. Fix what is wrong, don't try to engineer around it.
