Graham, Another way to look at it. Anesthesiologists have very high insurance premiums. If they get sued, the premiums go up. If enough of them get sued, the premiums for everyone goes up, even for those with spotless records. If the sue rate goes way up, the insurance company will stop insuring anesthesiologists and they will have to find a new insurer at even higher rates. It is not to their benefit to have incompetent nurse anesthetists or anesthesiology assistants working for them as that will increase the errors and the lawsuits. Even if they could hire nurses aides to do anesthesia, they would still insist they have a certain level of competence before they would turn an anesthetic over to them. The fact that many anesthesiologists are hiring AAs is an indication of the quality of the AAs. No one is going to hire someone that is going to get them sued time and time again.
