mk2dubbin, going by your serial number your gun is an 1887, it falls into around the 3rd quarter of 1887. The barrels were most likely cut (measure for choke) and the top lever looks like a replacement. To remove the stickiness from the gun, first try denatured alcohol on a lint free cotton cloth ball, not saturated, and move the ball around on the stock and see if it removes the dirt, grime and aged shellac. Do it properly and slowly in small areas and you will almost refinish the stock and make it look old by using the old finish. If the denatured alcohol doesn't work, try mineral spirits (turpentine) as it might me a varnished finish. Is the inlay on your forend ivory? I've seen another one like that but didn't have a close up picture of it. You stated you compared your father's 1891 and yours, did you see the big difference in the size of the breech balls of the two, and the bottom of the receivers. Also is yours a 10 ga.?
