So which party or parties do you think wouldn't have added to the shit show that has been witnessed over the last, I don't know, let's say 26 years. That includes both Labour and the Tories and captures the pivotal moments of 9/11, the financial chaos of 2008, Brexit, COVID and the war in Ukraine. I have voted Labour my whole life by the way, just not at every election, but when I have it's been for them. In my opinion there's not really much difference between either Labour or Tories and that's really the root of the problem. They fumble around with everything and people get pissed off. Then shrewd politicians exploit that. Then members of the public who are aghast at the exploitation and populist support it garners spend their time belittling the people who are enthralled at the hollow prospect of an improved change of guard. Then some people (me in this case) suggest it is probably counter productive to belittle the people that are probably going to vote in more of the same or even worse. So then those doing the belittling belittle people like me instead. And nothing improves. Ever.

There's two basic choices really. Total free market capitalism at one extreme and totalitarian communism at the opposite extreme. And all the shades in between those two options.

China has gone for both. A totalitarian political system married to an ultra capitalist economy. And if your only metric is GDP it's hard to argue with the results of that. Literally hundreds and hundreds of millions of people lifted out of poverty. But at what cost simultaneously? A huge environmental impact and people working in shit conditions alongside a government surveillance system that makes life on earth an open prison. Not to mention the effect a resurgent China has globally regarding the balance of power.

So over to the yanks who benefitted from our idiotic decision to fight world war 1, and then as if that wasn't enough they doubled down on that during and after world war 2. Became top dog and then entered into an Ideological war with the Marxists which has shaped the shit show we see globally now. Apparently the cold war was won by the early 90s. The 'end of history '. Free market capitalism and a massive stick to beat any detractors anywhere they can get away with it.

The rich get richer and everyone else has to deal with the consequences of that. Which is both a deterioration in standards alongside growing discontent and snake oil salesmen popping up to fix things.

Then instead of the mainstream media doing any in depth analysis of what is happening and more importantly strong theories about why we get a load of vague half arsed wank that does neither. And everyone speculates and falls out with each other and nothing ever improves. Ever. Except maybe for those with enough discipline in amongst all of that who have plugged away and over many years seen some personal improvement while everything else gets worse but that doesn't matter because in their own little personal bubble things have improved enough at least to give the illusion that it's all okay really. Enough to keep voting for more of the same. And dare I say it, enough to ensure they keep belittling anyone silly enough to want something better than more of the same. Especially that actually.
