The extractor has a notch in the bottom on each side, as the gun is closing the notch in the extractor is pushing the firing pin/s back in so that the gun can close without jamming on the firing pin/s.
In the information that Tom gave you about the length he makes his that is the length I would do also, making them longer is futile as a screw is only as strong as it's diameter. If the threads are stripped it means someone tried to put the screw in without having the countersink part of the top lever in it's fit. That screw turns with the top lever and will come loose. that is why it is always good to check to make sure it is snug. A good indication is the top lever riding up.
