Pat, What seems like a thousand years ago, back in my youth, I shot many a bandtailed pigeon in the hills west of Paso Robles, on the Central California Coast. Every December they would fly out of the Sierra's down to my native country to feed on the acorns. They made this migration every year by the thousands. The bag limit was 15 back in the fifties and sixties. Pigeon season overlapped quail season so a young man could legally shoot 15 bandtails and 10 valley quail per day and every now and then a mountain quail or two. After the shoot we would clean the birds and the mothers and wives of my Italian friends would make "Polenta" smothered with a spicy bird stew served with plenty of red wine and wonderful conversation. Oh, to be young again.
