I've been thumbing through Dick Baldwin's book "The Road to Yesterday" of trap shooting stories and see several Smiths pictured. Walter Beaver is shown holding a Specialty single -- he won the 1933 Grand American and the 1934 and 1946 North American Clay Target Championship. Marie Kautzky is show holding a Smith double, and her father Joe invented the Fox-Kautzky single selective trigger. A 1902 picture shows Billy Crosby holding a straight-gripped Smith with a lace on pad and a handgaurd on the barrels. Pictures of both Etta D. "Wanda" Lindsley and Ella Day Morris, top lady trap shooters of the late 19th century, show them holding hammerless Smith doubles.
