What a sickening, heartrending photograph! A wrecked gun and a maimed hand. Neither can be replaced. I suspect that there might be more to this than just a hot bismuth load. Perhaps a previous squib load went undetected or a piece of wadding hung up? There really is no way of knowing. The post says that it was a 1918 Field gun, so it is arguably "modern". And, those look like Armor Steel barrels to me, not the Damascus "fool-killers" that everybody seems to be so fearful of. What is the lesson here? I'd have to say that it is this: Know your gun very well before you take it out to shoot, and then know your loads even better. I have to suspect that poorly made factory and/or hand loads are the cause of much of this type of destruction. Even a modern fluid-steel barrel is no guarantee of complete safety with such a load in place. LM
