In my view, it's not "black and white". And if we view it that way, it seems too big. But there's a touch of grey (great song), and that's where we do our work.

"It never changes." You know, I heard that when I swung back at corporate culture too. And while I didn't "win", in the end, things were better because of me (was thanked on my way out of my building for the last time when switching jobs recently for fighting. And apologized to me because they wish'd they'd a stood with me).

Here's what I think of when I think of Nepotism in a town.

I would concede IT COULD BE A GOOD THING. It could, in a perfect world.

But in the real world, in my view, even if everything DOES run ok, it's still not right. It is highly unethical in my opinion and creates a culture that may not be in the best interest of the city.

"It will never change". Lots of people have said that over centuries. And there were lots of people who said "no more."

    The point is "lots".

Folks, in my view, we have to take the civic pride in our city to ensure we are prepared for the paradigm shifts that are coming that we may not be prepared for.

    And it's OUR fault.

Not the mayor. He is kick ass! Hell, he loves this city, and I would vote for him again. EVERY city employee I've met (police to teachers) I absolutely am happy to see them twice. Those assertions ARE not my point.

If I had never been exposed to international business and how it really operates as well as have observed the culture shifts (that we are now kicking and screaming our way into) coming...I would not be concerned. Because things ARE great in this town in my family and I's experience.

Our town is NOT ready. Our mayor and his team have done the best job they could. I'm not taking anything away from them.

    But I know, I KNOW what's coming.

What does this have to do with Nepotism?

    Everything.

In my view, if you have "one voice" in a family business, that is out-stan-ding (you know how to say outstanding properly, Opie! That's exactly how I'm saying it in my mind)!! But not in a city with a population that is becoming more diverse. And not in a global market where the Mill could be gone as quick as a snap of your fingers.

In my view, you need first a culture of many voices that represent the towns population.

Then, in my view, you need to use that culture to bring in the talent needed and get to work.

Opie is a big proponent of "throw your hat in".

So yes, "throw your hat in." But it doesn't have to be an earth moving effort. Be be civilly cognizant. For example, if this proves true or false...a person running could use it.

    Many hands make light work.

    Not just in this.

But in everything in our city.

We may disagree on the details, but our eyes see the same things.

I have kids, and family with kids, and friends with kids, and neighbors with kids, and fellow citizens with kids who have stayed in Granite because we love this town. Hell, I came back to it after leaving for the service.

In my view, THEY are why we have to do the work.

Or, we can keep kicking the can down the road.

    Have a good day.
