The ability to pursue other passions is a beauty of this profession, but if you want to be first author of a research paper you should get a Ph.D. I don't know of many (actually any) people with a masters degree having done this. A masters in anesthesia is fine goal in of itself, but research will require a bit more education in either at least a research orientated MS or most likely a PhD. As a profession AAs are in need of more PhD level practitioners to promote AA research.
