Hi Henry Yes and no, from my understanding there are still quit a few jobs for perfusionist. The market for perfusionist is still good. But how ever because of better technology for heart surgery especially open heart. Technology is coming up with better devices where the surgery in less invasive with out having to crack(open)the patient chest.Where I work Medicine I.C.U. and Shock Trauma I.C.U. are the only two units using a new type of cardiac out put monitor. It's called the Vigileo. It function just like the Edward Lifesciences cardiac out put monitor. The only difference you don't have to go through the PA. Meaning invasive. We obtain our CI,CO,&SVO2 form the Art-line. Radial or Femoral. Of the Vigileo. With one exception we can't obtain a wedge from the patient. That's why It's less invasive. It's another way to cut down on infection rate. Which at some point I was told it will go system wide. Through out the hospitals in the U.S.. But then again every state and hospital are different. There are talks of down sizing perfusionist. because of technology. I don't see them getting rid of perfusionist a 100%. I believe they will be around to stay. Maybe that's why some of them are going into Anesthesia to become an Anesthetist. Maybe job security or perhaps change. Either way I have respect for both profession AA-Cs and CCPs. They deserve it.
