You have three issues that you must over come. First, if AAs have never worked in that state before and/or never worked at that facility or with that group before you got a reluctance to try something new. They all know what a "MDA' or "CRNA" is but what exactly is an "AA? How do they fit into the provider world? How do they fit under the insurance coverage? Are they going to be accepted by the surgeons and OR nurses? Some of these questions can not be answered ahead of time but for those that can, such as the insurance issue, you need to have the answers ready to lay out. This is all part of getting your foot in the door. Make up a list of all the issues that might be a problem and try to have an answer ahead of time. If someone is negative about a particular issue, be positive it can be worked out. Second, once you got your foot in the door, you have to prove your worth. If the first AA in an area is not very good, or is a pain in the butt or in any way does not come across as a professional, it is going to taint the whole AA profession. The hiring of more AAs is going to be dependent upon how well the first one does. So if you are not one the best, clinically, professionally and with inter personal relationships, you should not go screw up things for others by getting into a situation where the whole profession is being judged by your actions. Third, keep pushing the TEAM concept. If the CRNAs see you as competition, which they do as a group, they will not want to work with you in a constructive fashion. You need to go out of your way to build the team and that includes working well with the OR staff. If the CRNAs are negative, do not bust your nut trying to win them over. Concentrate on the surgeons, OR nurses and technicians, etc. If after a period of time everyone has nothing but good to say about you and AAs and the only ones that are still negative are the CRNAs, it will be pretty obvious who is biased and that will put them in a bad light. It has been my experience that if someone proves them self competent at what they do, a lot of the animosity goes away. Good luck
